Are you on antibiotics which ones and how long? Did OJ ever hurt you other wise?

no i am not on an antibiotic. DR. did t seem to feel it was severe enough to warrant ab's. though i disagree strenuously. I was asking about the OJ because i wanted to try one of those Naked drinks, the liquid diet is maddening and i needed something with a little substance, but i dint want to introduce anything that will make things worse.

Thats strange my starts them right away. Have you ever been diagnosed with actual diverticulsis or just diverticula? What test did they do to diagnose you?

? yes I'm sure my doctor knew the difference when she diagnosed me five years ago.

Some doctors diagnose without any testing , is why I ask did they do like Ct Scan and blood work . Glad you are on the mends and hope all is well with no more attacks. Its great if you hadnt had an attack in 5 years that is awesome! I am trying to watch what I eat and what I can and cannot eat.

I would have gladly gone another five years if I'd had my druthers.

i know the feeling, it is so easy to miss something simple in the diet and bam! FLARE! pretty sure thats what happened this time. THE past week has been crazy at work so a lot of pick up meals on the run. i think it was the bread in an egg salad sandwich i had. I didnt check as throughly as usually do, and I think the bread was a PALEO type nut bread. Nuts are one thing we figured out right away that was one of my major triggers. sucks because i miss dry roasted planters something fierce. Still... cant snack like a teenager for ever i guess.

The main thing to remember is everyone is different as to how they react to various foods. I know in my case absolutely no orange juice because of the acid, however you may be different. Not sure about taking it with the antibiotics simply because CIPROFLOXACIN really tears up your stomach lining.

Never stay on the liquid diet more than 3 days. Depending on what day you're on, you can start introducing soft foods into your diet. There really isn't a good diet plan to follow because as I said, everyone is different. Stay away from acidic, greasy, spicy foods. Watch your fiber intake. No berries, nuts, corn, fresh uncooked vegetables, most fruits because of the seeds, thick skin and pulp, also severely limit red meat until your body can digest it. Drink lots of water. Ask away any questions, there are many people who have gone thru the same on this blog.

down to the last day today, and it has been very hot and humid lately so maybe it is a matter of increasing the daily liquid intake.

What I didn't mention is that I am just recovering from another attack. I refuse to refer to them as a flare. I am just over a year from having open cut sigmoid colectomy. I've been seriously trying to watch what I eat but learned something new. I had gone to my doctor about 3 weeks ago with an UTI, the antibiotics he prescribed weren't cutting it. went back in last week, diagnosed with another attack and given the Cipro and flagyl. If my doctor had prescribed it in the first place I wouldn't have had another attack. Apparently they go hand in hand.

Am I understanding correctly, that you had the surgery and still having flares?

Supposedly after surgery only 10 percent of people get flare ups again, apparently I'm one of the unlucky ones. I had surgery last May 2018. No attacks until now. What I didn't know was that UTI'S and diverticulitis are hand in hand. If my doctor had prescribed me the ciprofloxacin and flagyl first I wouldn't have had the attack. Nothing is more depressing than going through this again. At least this time the attack was much more milder than the others. Still hurts but nothing like before.

jeez that sounds awful, but in glad you mentioned this, i have a follow up with the doc tomorrow AM, and was seriously considering talking surgery. I'll have to make sure ask about the CIPRO and flagyl. Also didn't know that about UTI's. Never saw that in any if the literature from the VA. I giess that tends to be more common illness in ladies then men, still, the mire you know...

Is there information as it relates to UTI's and diverticulitis? I'm curious because I've had two different doctors tell me two different things. It makes sense to me but I guess one doctor thinks it's a ridiculous idea.

They really know very little about our disease which for us, sucks. There is no written literature but ALL of my doctors said the same thing. And Bryan, would I do the surgery again, ABSOLUTELY! If I hadn't, I would have died. Life has been good until my UTI, now I have to make sure I drink lots of water so it won't trigger another attack. At least this time the attack was mild, which all 19+ I've experienced in the previous two years were extreme.

thats what I'm coming to realize that there are a lot of conflicting reports on what can and cant trigger it. Best info i got so far has been equal to your comment about it being different with each sufferer.

Was just discussing with my gal pal the pros and cons of the surgery. The idea that it could lead to peritonitis is the big selling point for me.

Yes, I had excessive scar tissue and tears in my colon. And I did develop sepsis.
