ORIF ankle surgery

Hi, if anyone could relate to me or help me out. Its been two weeks since i had an operation from an ORIF surgery on my left ankle which i have a plate and 6 screws where on the other side of the ankle i have a fixation of a torn ligament. They have removed my cast and my doctor has put another cast on for another 4 weeks and a surgery shoe so i can start walking with barely no weight. Does anyone know if throughout the process of the 4 weeks i can start putting a bit more weight as i go along. If anyone could relate to this. Thank You

    Hi Emily,

Sorry you had to go through all this. I had the ankle surgery and after 2 weeks they changed my cast and put another one which is very light. The previous one was very heavy. This is for 4 weeks but I haven't been given any shoe and told me no weight bearing so no walking and feet elevated most of the time. I'm hoping that when I go the next appointment in early july(4 weeks after the new cast) they will put me on boot to start little weight.

Most of them who had ankle surgery had total 6 weeks no weight bearing. I'm surprised they gave you a shoe to start lil walking. Don't try to put any weight until you chk with your dr or physiotherapist. I think it's too early. It's been 5 weeks for me after surgery but still I can't rest my foot down on the floor for long while sitting and walking or putting weight I can't think of yet!

Hope you get better soon but please don't overdo anything you are not comfortable with and without checking with your dr.

Sorry to hear about your surgery. The first 6 weeks are no weight bearing after ORIF ankle, followed by another up to 6 weeks in a walking boot with partial weight bearing. So no walking just yet. Walking in a boot starts after 6 weeks.Weight has to be increased gradually up to 12 weeks.

I had ORIF right ankle surgery exactly 12 weeks ago (plate and 6 screws). I was like you 2 weeks in a heavy cast, then another 4 weeks in a fibreglass cast. I started walking in a boot partial weight bearing after week 6. Anyway, yesterday at my 12 weeks follow up appointmend I got clearance to walk in my shoe. I walk unaided so I fully recoverd. Good luck and don't overdo it.

Hi emily, When i first had the plaster cast removed and put into a fiber cast i was in the first one for 2 weeks then had another fitted for 4 weeks both with NWB. Then 3 weeks ago i wasput into a boot with just LWB. I have nother week left which will be 4 weeks in all for the boot. I have started physo my last one was wednesday where i got told they may start to reduse the use of the boot and i may be able to walk with crutches in the home, but have to wear the boot when out. So doessound to me thats its a bit too early for you to be walking using too much weight. I woud take it easy untill your told you can apply more weight. You dont want to do damage and go backwards..wishing you luck  sx
