Orthotics advice

Posted , 7 users are following.

Hi all. Just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone on here who has given great advice on THR. I will be having mine on Monday and feel very prepared thanks to this forum. Hopefully I can actually enjoy my 30s after it! The only question I still have is..do you need to wear an orthotic in your shoe after the surgery due to differences in leg length? If so what are they like and where would I get one? I'm based in Ireland. Thanks again!

    Good morning Sinead,

Good luck with your op on Monday, it really does help to read about other people's experiences.  I had a full hip replacement on 30th January after a fall, I'd never had any broken bones and reached 75, but when I did I made a good job of it, no half measures.

i drove myself to my six week check up and I am walking without a stick, I haven't needed anything done to my shoes and hope you don't.  You are young and will come out f the op just fine.

All the best for Monday, I think the anticipation of it all is worse than anything.

Take care and look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards Margaret.

    dear sinaed,

congratulations on getting the surgery !!!  that is a big decision you made and takes courage ...You probably will enjoy your new hip until your 60's, darling ...

don't worry about orthotics yet -- Margaret here gave you a lovely response - perception of leg length difference right after THR surgery is normal as hardware needs time to settle - I am sure that your othopedic surgeon or his office will be able to refer you if needed ...

    keep coming here okay ...

good luck on Monday ... you will be fine and I am looking forward to your first post-op post ...

    big warm hug

Good luck Sinead, your surgeon will try to get leg lengths equal. Mine did but I had been lopsided a long time before op. He told me it would feel weird. But it didnt. 21 months on feel great. I was 56 when I had mine done. You will get your life back and be able to enjoy life. Xxx

    Good luck Sinead!

I think you are less likely for leg length discrepancy due to your young age. If it does happen cross that bridge when you get to it. I was told if both hips are arthritic then fixing one may cause a difference in leg length.

    Keep us informed...prayers for you!

Not everyone needs these.  I had my hip done a month ago and my legs are both the same length.  Wait and see and I am sure your surgeon will advise you on it.

Thanks everyone. I'll wait and speak to my doc after the operation and see then smile

Good luck Sinead. My leg was slightly shorter due to OA, but my surgeon made them the same length.
