Osteoarthritis

I have osteoarthritis in my ankle and I've also suffered from gout that have made walking unbearable, I applied for pip and scored 6 on daily living compound and 4 on mobility. My condition has got worse on bad days during flare ups I can't walk at all feels like I've got broken ankles. I use a wheel chair but on good days I can walk, guess what I was only marked on good days. Any suggestions

Appeal.  I think something like 80% of appeals go through, which proves the initial assessments are deliberately down-marking people.  I suppose a lot of people will be too down hearted to appeal and thus the Gov save money.  Definitely appeal.  Are you under a specialist or consultant?  If yes, get the specialist or consultant to write you letter outlining the extent of your disability (on a bad day).  Take the letter to your appeal appointment.  Good luck.

    Hello Mark,

could I suggest that you start another post under Benefits and Allowances.  You can say the same as you have here, but then Denise and others will pick up on it and will be able to advise you fully.  Unfortunately it's not just a case of going to appeal, there are other things you need to do first.  Good luck

Unfortunately I cant advise you regarding the benefits situation, I have no knowledge in that area.  I do however like you have OA in one ankle as a result of a major accident which crushed the bones and killed off all the cartilage.  I now have plates and pins/bolts etc., and bone on bone OA.  Just to help you cope with the discomfort my tip is fresh ginger (ie ginger root not powder or stem ginger) - couple of ways it can be used to help.  Either mince it and steep in boiling water to drink like tea (you can add lemon/sugar if you like), or mince it up and mix with body lotion or hand cream and rub all over the affected area, leave it on for a couple of hours before washing off.  It really takes down the inflammation and is also nice for the skin.  Before I discovered this worked, I was also wheelchair bound for a lot of the time and could just able hobble a few yards at others, now at least I can walk about and dont get woken up at night in pain.
