Osteopathic spine fractures and Bisophonates

Posted , 4 users are following.

Just wondering if Bisophonates are the best treatment or can you heal your bone fractures with alternatives medicines ?

My X ray results this week showed 4 hairline fractures on my spine which give me considerable pain. I'm just taking paracetemol and ibuprofen for the pain but my doctor has said I also need to take calcium and vitamin d and start on Bisophonates.

No lower back problems until this year, but have Graves disease (overactive thyroid).

Any advice would be great thanks

Thanks

Biphosphonates do not heal fractures. They are not taken for that reason.

I would wait to find out the tscores and give yourself some time to research and be happy with your decision.

How did the hairline fractures happen?

      Have you seen a specialist?

Your  blood tests will tell you if you are lacking vitamin D3 and calcium.

Vitamin K2 is good to take as it aims the calcium onto the bones.

I am guessing you are having treatment for your overactive thyroid which is likely to be the cause or part of the reason for your possible osteoporosis.

Do the tests and make the best decision for you.

In the meantime have a diet that supports your bones which includes yoghurt, cheese, bony broth, prunes, leafy greens, avocados and lots of vegetables and some fruit.

Ask about exercise as you may not be able to do that until you are healed.

All the best with whatever you decide to do.

Hi Kathleen thanks very much for replying I’m having a bone density scan in October so then I’ll be able to check T scores and decide which way to go. No reason for fractures - first lower back pain in May was just getting out of my car , second lower back pain was lifting a plant pot . Both sets of back pain lasted 2 weeks then went - but pain came back in July and stayed with me.  I had a horrific back spasm whilst trying to get out of bed - after that I was unable to sleep on my back or side for 6 weeks . I visited an osteopath and she manipulated my spine and with one treatment I could sleep flat .

I’ve not seen a specialist yet only doctor,  physio and osteopath . I’m not on medication for Graves now ( I did courses of carbimazole) but finally got my  Graves antibodies down and my thyroid under control with supplements and cbd oil

I’ll look at the other supplement as well as diet and exercise when feeling up to it .

The osteoporosis is new to me and only found out X-ray results this week where they identified the 4 fractures .

Sorry about the fractures, they must be very painful!

That is so scary to think we can break our backs without doing much to cause it.

My tscores are pretty bad and that worries me that I could break it. I have other issues with my back too such as bulging discs and scoliosis as well as degernative disc disease and arthritis as well so I am so I am basically disabled.

The pain comes and goes depending on what I’m doing - I’m worst first thing in the morning getting out of bed but as the day goes on I feel slightly better . I’m using ice packs for pain and paracetamol/ibuprofen - I  thought I might have arthritis in the spine but X-ray showed fractures .

I hope you manage to get sorted Kathleen as you must be in an awful lot of pain, thanks for your advice and take good care of yourself

I am just really limited. I try not to set it off. I spent a lot of time getting help but nothing worked for long so I just manage it now. I can’t sit on a normal chair or walk for long but I do manage small walks and some exercises using weights, squats, tippy toe and down on heel, simple things like sit to stand, etc. Standing in one spot is too hard. I use a wheeled walker.

I have googled about Prolia and bisphosphonates and learnt that bisphosphontates are for effective than Prolia in reducing spine fractures . Prolia also increases infection risks and rebound fracture. I do not know if it prevent hip fracture.

If your DXA scan confirms osteoporosis and you feel you want to take one of the medications it's beginning to look like bisphosphonates may still be the best option.  Latest recommendation however is to take them for only two or perhaps three years.  This will help to avoid the bad effects of long term bisphosphonate therapy where bones become brittle.  Whatever you decide to do, please do all the natural things as well.  There is research showing that nutrition and exercise improve bone density, although some doctors still think this isn't possible.  If you google healthunlocked my osteoporosis journey you will find my account of what I've done.

So Aclasta which falls in the group of Bisphosphonates should be taken for a maximum period of 3 years. In India there is Stoplos One (zolendronate) manufactured by Zydus Cadila. I do not wherether if falls in the same class as Atlasta. Where Aclasta is manufactured? It is so costly.

But your mother does not need the drugs as she does not have readings of like -3 or worse. She just needs to have a good diet and some exercise if she can manage it. The drugs are not something you take just in case, they are very serious drugs that you resort to because you know there is no choice and your tscores are severe like -4.

Hi Anhaga thanks for getting back to me. I’ve decided to wait for Dexa scan before making a decision on bisophonates as I would prefer to go down the route of natural supplements, good diet and exercise (when not in pain I’d exercise) .

Healthunlocked I’ll join but how do I find your journey can i search on health unlocked by your name ?

Will have a proper read of all your info and links on your journey with osteoporosis on health unlocked - very helpful thanks - I’m in Cornwall and before back pain was a regular Nordic Walker with a group. Hope to get back to Nordic walking soon..

I do walk most days either a town walk or beach walk as we have 2 cocker spaniel girl dogs - my husband handles the leads at the moment as they’re only 2 years old and if they see a bird - they tend to pull . They’re ok on the beach as they’re off their leads and in the sea .

      😊
