Osteoporosis/alendronic acid

Posted , 13 users are following.

I was put on alendronic acid for osteoporosis but it had horrendous side effects so stopped taking it and talking to GP tomorrow but hoping I can achieve some protection from high dose Vit D3 and some calcium.  Has anyone else on here had a problem with alendronic acid and found a good SAFE alternative?

Re: the exchange among kathleen, mw, and alison, I want to clarify that there are TWO allisons in this discussion; I'm the one with two L's. I am especially anxious to point that out, since as it happens, I do not agree with the other alison that kathleen's comments directed at mw were rude. Like kathleen, I found mw's advisories  condescending, mainly the parts about "adherence." If one were to hypothetically assemble all of the patients who had dutifully and unquestioningly "adhered" to medical advice yet sustained serious harm, the line would probably span a large continent.

I have to agree Allison - you only have to think of hormones misused, statins and so many other things  Unfortunately GPs will write out prescriptions with no mention of serious side effects.  It's left to us as patients to find those out!

    Hi Chris

I too have been searching for information and feedback from people taking Protelos.  I feel that for me it's the best of a bad lot and was hoping to get others reviews.  I took it  for two years. And then unfortunately my GP refused to give me any more prescriptions because of the cardiac scare aassociated with it.  dexa showed big improvement which I know needs to be adjusted to take account of  stronium, but  even so there was improvement.

After two years with no medication, just calcium rich diet and exercise I had a dexa which showed that the gain I had made on the Protelos was Lost and more besides.

I went to a consultant who strongly advised Prolia,  I'm not happy about taking this and have managed to get a six month prescription for protelos

which I would like to keep taking but fear he will not repeat the prescription for me.  My spine tscore is -3.

If you are able to exercise there is evidence coming out now that supports and details studies that show that exercise does help to improve bone density and strength.

Anhaga has been researching this and found a very sound report that detailed the findings of a particular study.

Vitamin K2 puts the calcium onto the bones. Magnesium is also beneficial.  Most people are now taking vitamin D3 even in Australia when living in a very sunny State which says something to me about the environment.

I have not started taking any of the drugs as my gut tells me not to!

I am about to have another bone density scan exactly one year after I was diagnosed with osteoporosis.

kathleen, my drs (primary care and endocrinologist) say that bone-density scanning more often than once every two years isn't advised as there's not enough change during the shorter timeframe to be meaningful. Though maybe your drs recommend it sooner for some reason specific to your situation (?)

Yes, as mine cannot really keep progressing much. Hoping it is the same or improved by some magic lol! The base of the spine was -4.3. It is free annually for over 70 in Australia but they need to test for it much earlier I feel.

Whether one could do much about it I don't know though!

I had my last dexascan in November 2015 and the report that I received suggests that I return for a rescan after 12 months has passed.  This could of course be an automatic response in the computer programming that is used to produce the report. I shall remind the GP of this after a year has elapsed and wait for the weasel worded reply that will attempt to put me off (He did this once before when I wasn't prepared for it and I used the locum to get the rescan that showed the OP).  (Merely adding my two pennyworth to the general pool)

I am female 73 yr old with under active thyroid and acid reflux , was diagnosed 2016 my doctor prescribed me with high dose Evacal D3 1500 2 a day . I was reluctant at 1st to taking the electronic acid because what I 'd read about its side effects . I really wanted to keep to natural supplements , I'd researched their records on the web in USA but my Dr was reluctant to help me with prescribing supplements and scans to follow my progress. I've been on the electronic acid now for 3mths , so far with no nice able side effects. My Dr also advised me to attend my dental hygienist, which I did. My 2nd appointment is in October. I'm anxious to know and compare my progress with other patients in UK . I should also mention due to bad acid reflux I do have a 3mm hernia in my oesophagus..I must admit writing all this down I feel a complete wreck ... but I manage to play and enjoy outdoor bowls and I like to swim and attend aqua aerobics too...
