Osteoporosis - Forsteo

hi everyone, after three fractures, including one at T12, I've just been prescribed Forsteo.  I'm 54 with a score of 4.6 spine, 3.6 femur.  I've studied reports about Forsteo and would like to hear about reactions & results from real patients please.  Am I about to embark on a real course of successful treatment...? And, how bad are the reported side effects please?

    I was trawling throught the National l Osteoporosis Web site recently and came across the following:  

    Q Are you familiar with a fairly new osteo drug, Forteo?

    A: It is prescribed for people with severe osteoporosis (ex. -3.5 -4) It is supposed to actually build bone but they don’t now exactly how. It was reported to have caused osteosarcoma in some lab rats that were given extra high doses for more than two years, so it is recommend that pts. not take it for more than two years.

    Q: Are there alternative ways to deal with severe osteoporosis as opposed to pharmeceuticals?

    A: I think you answered your own question regarding Forteo. I would not feel comfortable with any medication that comes with a black box label. The only proven way to deal with osteoporosis is through nutrition and exercise. I would talk to your doctor and get referred to a specialist who can help guide your progression so that you can begin to incorporate movements and strengthening exercises into your daily routine. At the same time, look to increase your consumption of plant based whole foods, lots of leafy greens, and even green juices (these serve as your “multi-vitamin”)- Nutrition, exercise and sensible exposure to sunshine are considered “alternative” treatments- but they are the only 100% safe and 100% proven to work solutions. Drugs and hormone therapy have their place in rare instances, but even then they are never the complete answer- you cannot heal a chronic condition with medication.

    I feel there is a lot of truth in what this chap says, he reports that strength training and restistance training is important - not just walking on a treadmill

    He also talks about vitamins and mineral and comments that calcium should not be taken in isolation. 

    If you have time look him up and let me know what you think - is he just trying to sell the companies health drinks?

      He may sincerely believe that his all-natural approach is a panacea. It isn't. It is untrue that "the only proven way to deal with osteoporosis is through food and exercise." There is no "proof" that diet and exercise have any significant impact on the course of osteoporosis. If they did, osetoporosis would afflict mainly the overweight and sedentary. To the contrary, like cancer, it's an equal-opportunity disease (or condition, for those of us still unsure which term is more accurate). That said, eating healthily and exercising are worthwhile in themselves; they have other health benefits and may marginally help bone health.

      You say There is no "proof" that diet and exercise have any significant impact on the course of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is in my genes and because of this I have exercised and followed a healthy diet all my life.  My GP tells me I would have been diagnosed much, much sooner had I not done this - so I cannot agree with your statement. 

      By exefcise I mean weight and resistance training , not just walking!

      I'm glad that you've been able to delay the onset of osteoporosis by whatever means. There's no point in quibbling as to what may be behind your having been able to do so. However, what your GP says is just conjecture. He has no way of knowing whether, absent diet and exercise, osteoporosis would have commenced sooner, later, or at the same point in time.
