Osteoporosis is more complex than bad diet or lack of exercise

I have not contributed to this forum for several years due to the negativity that my choice of dealing with my condition, received.

However, I feel it is only fair to say what a positive impact the drug, Risdronate, has had on my life.

I was extremely shocked to discover I had this condition. I was normal weight, never been on bone thinning drugs, had no family history, never smoked, ate a very healthy diet and have always enjoyed exercise. Yet, after a second spinal fracture, my DEXA scan read a drastic score of -3.4 and a -3.5. I started taking Risedronate, for 5 years. After 3 years, my scores improved to -2.4 and -2.9. After 5 years, I improved further with readings of -1.9 and -2.4. I was delighted and having had no side effects decided to look into why some people develop osteoporosis, when there appears to be no reason. I had my diet analysed and it was found to be more than adequate in calcium, magnesium and other trace elements, for making good bones. I always exercise and over the summer, I emptied and distributed 25 bags, each weighing 850 kgs of stones, gravel and top soil, without using any machines, as well as walking and using the gym. So, why did I develop osteoporosis? A GP at my surgery decided, knowing my history, decided to look into my case. To cut a long story short, it has been discovered, that I don't produce much stomach acid. As acid helps with the absorption of calcium, could this be the reason? It was also advised not to drink so much water after meals because it dilutes stomach acid. Drink water before a meal was advised.

I now take cider vinegar, with some water, before every meal.

If I need to return to taking Risedronate later, I have no worries. I see it as a lifeline and was more frightened of being unable to walk or do all the normal things I enjoy in life.

A forum like this works best when people are encouraged to choose their path forward having listened to all sides of the argument. I still write to many of the ladies who have contributed to this forum in my early days and I am pleased I have been able to help. as they have helped me.

While I would NEVER advise people to take, or not take drugs, I would always advise a healthy diet and lifestyle. Just sometimes, for some of us, its not enough.
