Osteoporosis meds after hip replacement
Posted , 6 users are following.
My hip fractured with no trauma...in fact walked on it for 3 weeks. Osteoporosis contributed...porous stem. My surgeon talked me out of medication for it...just said load up on calcium. There are side effects with medication...and he didn't believe they were that efficacious.
Does anyone have a different take on the medication?

I thought you should take vitamin D to absorb calcium not calcium by itself.

Yes, you're right....the calcium pills I take have vitamin D in them.

I definitely will keep taking the Calcium/D pills. I was just wondering about the medications especially for Osteoporosis...whether they do anything or not. My surgeon doesn't think so...I'm wondering about a 2nd opinion.
I don't want another "surprise" hip fracture.

I believe calcium and vit D helps. I take steroids which has a side effect of osteoporosis so I was prescribed vit D/calcium. A lot of people wear weight vests to build up their bones. There is quite a lot of information on the internet on building up your Dexascan results. People can improve the readings without taking bisphosphonates. My doctor is always trying to force them on me.

I broke my thigh last year, but I only had a bone scan recently. And yes I have osteoporosis!! Never had any aches or pains before diagnosis, but my doctor said everyone had different degrees of it. Anyway, I had my first injection last month without any ill effects. Id rather the injection than take a tablet, as I do get lazy sometimes. I also still take vit D and calcium when I remember!! Ha Ha.

Hello Joy
Magnesium builds bones from inside, calcium builds bones on the outside therefore by taking calcium only the bone still remains porous on the inside. Do be careful with the calcium as that is easy to overdo and can block arteries. If you have cereal, milk in tea/coffee, yogurt you tend to get enough calcium.
Magnesium is the most important supplement you can take. Magnesium, calcium and vitamin D all work together and need to be finally balanced.
