Other medications affect ESR readings

Hello Everyone ,

I have a friend who has PMR symptoms but her ESR reading is 6. She is on celebrex and tamoxicifin would these medications affect the readings as her other symptoms are just what I have and I have had PMR for 2.5 years.

Any information would be good.

About 1 in 5 people with PMR don't have raised blood markers - my ESR is rarely about 4! However, Celebrex is an NSAID - and that could keep inflammatory markers down.

PMR is not the disease however - it is the symptoms of an underlying illness and if she has such symptoms she should see a doctor and ask to be investigated as some of the underlying causes can be serious.

When I saw a different Rheumie if you remember on Monday this week (the one that has told me to drop 1mg each week from Jan 1st) he said  you may never have  had PMR....your markers have never been very high, I didn`t have the energy to argue! (have got chest infection)

I got phone call from hospital today to ask if I would go ahead with the Vasculitis study because they want to be able to diagnose correctly.....yippee to that I say......and yes I will........

Firstly I hope everyone had a good Christmas . I wish you all a Happy New Year and all the best for 2017.

Thank you for the replies regarding my friends ESR levels . She is going to see a rhumatoligist and needs a blood test before going. She is wondering should she stop taking the celebrex before going to give blood and if so for how many days before to get  a truer reeding? Her doctor has been looking at PMR for the past two years but then she had another more serious illness so the PMR testing was let slide during this time. My frind has been reading these pages and found everyone's input helpful So thank you all for that.

    Thanks again Fiona

That is something to ask a doctor - and it will depend on what tests he wants done.
