3 days ago i went to the doctor in Lombok (i'm out traveling) To look up my earproblem. i have been diving for a couple of days. I had pain when pressing on my ear, some itching. The doctor looked in my ear and then pulled out something that looked like white earwax. He told me my ears was full of this white stuff. He then cleard my ear using a syringe looking thing that filled my ear with some water if some kind. After that he filled my ear with eardrops and i laid there for some time. Then he gave me painkillers and said that i was to take them if i felt pain. Now my question is it has been 3 days and i feels a little better but not much. Why didnt he give me eardrops? He told me my eardrum looked fine. Should i go buy some eardrops or just let it heal by itself?

Thank you

He probably put antiseptic / antibiotic cream in the ear.

Ear irritation takes quite a while to heal because it is a very delicate area.

To clean it out, he probably used a saline solution and then made sure the ear was dry before proceeding with anything else. **Making sure inside the ear isn't wet is of great importance

I would not buy over the counter ear drops as you don't know what the substance was that he took from your ear.

I would advise to see a Dr, take pain medication and ibropen (an anti inflammatory medication) should help the pain and irritation. I would probably opt for oral antibiotics rather than drops but that should be discussed with a registered doctor

In my case its such a mild case. My ear is not swollen that much and i have almost no pain (except when pushing on the ear). It feels like this should have been heald or atleast gotten better in 4 days?... I think im seeing a new doctor tomorrow. Its such a shame the first one didnt do a proper job since im on vacation and i want to dive. I have only 2 days left now... Eith proper care from the start it should of healed in 6 days i think?

To be honest, there's no such thing a 'propper ENT care'. ENT love to prescribe antibiotic ear drops for ear infections with ongoing discharge. The ear drops at best, will only get rid of the discharge, they will not get rid of the underlying problem I.e. if the infection is deeper behind the eardrum.

ENT only class an ear discharge of more than 3 months as chronic or urgent. For none complex discharge with no complications (such as no perforated eardrum) it is conceivable to expect the discharge to be resolved within 7 days on bored spectrum antibiotics along with aural toilet. Ears can be a huge pain in the rear and also, treatment also depends on the nature of the bacteria, or fungi. If the problem persists after the course of treatment, I would advise to see the specialists again. It may be worth getting a swab done for culture sensitivities to determine which antibiotics kill the bacteria / fungi , so a more targeted antibiotic can be given.

Keep all receipts and inform your travel insurance company as you'd likely be entitled to compensation / money back from medical bills.
