hi, my doctor told me its possible to be in your system for months even years and something can suddenly cause an outbreak. Im not sure how true that is.

Thank you I haven't had sex for over a year and I've now had an outbreak which completely baffled me as I haven't recently had sex.

so when did you test positive and when was your outbreak? could you give me a timeline?

Yes, absolutely. What is most likely in a situation like that, is that previous outbreaks were so mild that they weren't noticed, and that they were probably few and far between. But if your immune system has taken a hit and compromised in any way, then it's possible for an outbreak years after to be much more severe than those previous, and because of this it can be the first outbreak that actually gets noticed.
