An ultrasound scan has detected a big 23cm ( 9.5 inch ) ovarian cyst. I am 62 years old have no pain but a very large swollen stomach, Has anyone had such a large cyst or had a cyst at my age? If yes please let me know how the surgery went. My surgeon is treating my case as urgent and tomorrow I go for a MRI scan with surgery to follow asap.

Hi as Kazreeeeen says the thought of the op is worse than the reality, so please try not to worry. I had mine on the 3rd March and am well on the way to recovery now. The first few days are the worse, but you are well looked after and the nurses cant do enough to ensure your not in pain. I stayed in for 7 days in the end, due to abdominal swelling and nausea, resulting in not being able to eat until day 4, but I lost lots of weight bonus wink My scar is sore and I am very tired, but I am resting lots which is helping. The worse things is wind and constipation after the op, take what they offer you as it is very uncomfortable. I resisted and ended up in pain by day 8, took too much Laxido and am still feeling its effects redface Trust the doctors and nursing staff and you will be ok. So glad my twin aliens are gone YES there were two! Cant wait until next week when I can go out and enjoy the spring sunshine smile

Hi I had open surgery and have a huge vertical scar from my public bone to above my navel. One cyst was 20cm the other much smaller so couldn't have a laparoscopy. Feeling better every day, will venture out for a short walk today, as hardly any pain now, just very weak and tired smile Good luck with yours and try not to worry X

That's fantastic!!! I'm so glad everything went well... I'm on pins and needles right now as my surgery is coming up on March 27th. There's nothing like a great success story to help ease the nerves. My surgeon also explained that I'll be cut from pubic bone to above the navel. I actually went to one of our great health food stores this afternoon and stocked up on shea butter, aloe vera, and natural soaps in the hopes that the scar heals well. How many days were you in the hospital? My surgeon said it will be 2 days if everything goes well...

Hi 7 days so quite a long time, I had a painfully swollen stomach after and nausea for the first 4 days, so unable to eat,, plus I live on my own so they were making sure I would be able to manage at home. The nursing staff were fantastic ensuring I was comfortable. The cyst had pushed my bowel out of place as so big, so they had to move things around, causing the extra swelling. I'm sure you will be fine, but if you feel very uncomfortable don't go home until you feel able XXX

    Hi

I was admitted with abdominal pain in February and after a CT scan and ultra sound I was told I had a 20.5 cm complex cyst on my left ovary and a smaller cyst on my right ovary. I had only one episode of pain but had been suffering from severe headaches and nausea, which I was told was due to hormonal changes. As the cyst was large I only waited 3 weeks for surgery, so on 20th Feb I had a laporotomy with a 8inch vertical incisionto remove both cysts and ovaries, I had a hysterectomy 13 years ago. I had spinal morphine which lasted 24 hours post op and a PCA. I had no pain for the first 48 hours and didn't need to use the PCA at all. No wind pain but I agree take something if offered for the constipation, I used Laxido and Lactolose which were very effective. I had my sutures removed at 12 days post op which was a couple of days too long I think. I saw the consultant and she told me the cyst had grown since the scan but everything looked good. Then I had the phone call to go in and see the consultant, I am a nurse practitioner and I knew what that meant !! 2 days with little sleep, I was told that the cysts were fine but malignancy on my one ovary and sample sent for further staining at a a different Lab, but it was caught early so feel very positive.I'm so glad I was treated so promptly and have been kept informed at every stage, its very different being a patient. I feel really well, however still a little anxious, I have an appointment on 21st to discuss what happens next !

I had an ovarian cyst a 19! It was the most scariest thing ever at that age! I had a 3lb aggressive cyst pulled out of me. They asked me if I was pregnant, I said I wasn't sure at the time because I was in a relationship. But anyway I wasn't and they operated and took it out with my right ovary. It had sabotaged it! So I had one ovary to give me eggs! I didn't do too bad on 3 kids then! Bit I've had problems with periods and menopause for a few years now. I had a show last week for two evenings that was a shock after since April 2012 when they disappeared for that length of time! Anyway I have to go for an ultra sound sound just waiting for the appt. I hope they don't find anything that shouldn't be there.

But I seem okay since last week, no more shows its gone again my bloated tummy has gone too. But still a bit of a tummy but not enough to moan about. Anyway watch this space girls god bless you all.

We have more problems than men don't we just!

Hi I'm 37 and so glad to have found this thread, I have been told I have a complex cyst on my right ovary ( which is weird as I went to doctor with pain in my left), this was diangnosed via TV ultrasound and have since been for an MRI which I am currently awauting results on. The consultants meet today for their MD Meeting which they have confirmed I am on list to be discussed.

I'm especially nervous as still having treatment for breast cancer (diangosed sept 2012, op, chemo, rads, herceptin and tamoxifen). Anyway been experiencing lots of dull pain and struggling with my bowels a bit, so wouldnt be surprised if they say its pushing on my bowel etc

Loving the reports of weight loss after surgery as I seemed to have pout on 2 stone in 4 months on top of my chemo and steroid weight gain :-/

I have suffered with cysts in my left ovary for some time now. Back n forth to the GP to be kept being told it was IBS. I do suffer with IBS as had this for a number of years. Just before Christmas last year, I had the worst pain imaginable I was doubled up n felt sick, bloated, tired constantly and felt like no one was listening to me (even my family n friends was saying it must be a flare up on your IBS. Anyway after Christmas the health van came to my place of work to discuss any health issues. I explained all my symptoms to her and she then referred me back to my GP to be screened for ovarian cancer. I went to the GP that day and saw a lady doctor who I first assumed was a locum doctor, to be told no I'm a partner in the practice n gave been for 12 months. All the other doctors I had seen where male n locums. Anyway she sent me for all blood tests including CA125, these came back negative to my relief. I then had a ultrasound scan n they wanted to do a VT scan there n then. That was the Thursday 6th Jan 2014.. By the Monday my doctor had rang me personally n said I need to see her ASAP. My worst fears was happening, it's cancer but how I put on too much weight considering if it was I should be loosing n gaining. I went n saw her, it turned out it is not cancer but 2 large ovarian cysts on my left ovary. Got referred to the hospital for more tests etc n yesterday I had key hole surgery to remove the cysts n the left ovary ;D

Today I have been discharged by the surgeon to his satisfaction smile to be honest I have never ft better today, I still have a swollen tummy, feel sore but that's to be excepted. I needn't have worried at all as what was said from start to finish was all correct. I'm looking forward to a speedy recovery n return to work. They have signed me off for 3 weeks but fingers crossed will take just 2 weeks.

Not as bad as I first thought all back in January smile

Hope this all helps but I do know everyone is different n suffers in different ways, but I for feel that nothing is as bad as what people have mentioned..

Take care girls and be open minded with your own issues n listen to hour body not what the doctor fobs you off with

Have just discovered this forum and it is such a help to my peace of mind. I am post menopausal andI have been diagnosed with a 25x17x13 cm cyst and am awaiting an MRI scan prior to surgery. I actually livein France and am not always 100% understanding of the possibilities and options that await me. It is really great to hear of other people's experiences and to be able to identify with them. Of course, cancer is the uppermost in my mind which makes me quite fearful to say the least. I live by myself and although I havesome wonderful friends who are very supportive, you know that basically you have to be strong to get through the ordeal. I can do this, I tell myself some of the time, and then suffer such a lack of confidence and I despise myself for being so pathetic.. Anyway, the good news is that in the future I will be able to do up my bottom button to say nothing of the zip of my jeans. Excellent!

Thank you everybody for sharing your experiences. I am so grateful

Hi Jennifer try not to worry, it seems the larger the cyst the more likely it is to be a simple cyst filled with mucus and benign. With such a large cyst (mine was 20cm) you will receive good care and things should happen quickly. You are likely to need a laparotomy with a vertical scar like me due to its size. 3 weeks on I am recovering well and the care I received was amazing. At least you are post menopausal, I had my ovaries removed during the op so am now going through a surgical menopause at 48, you at least wont have that to deal with, while recovering smile My tummy is only slightly swollen now (I looked 6 months pregnant before the op) and I can fit into my size 12 jeans again razz Good luck I hope all goes well for you, hugs XXX

No worries I live on my own too following my marriage breakdown, so know your concerns. utilise those lovely friends don't be afraid to ask for their help. Prepare well, I cooked extra meals and froze them in the run up to my op. Meaning I was able to eat healthily once discharged from hospital, which made life so much easier. Be kind to yourself and don't try to do to much and you will be fine smile all the best X

Hi everyone... Just doing a final check in; my surgery is tomorrow morning. Jenny, I'm so glad you're doing so well. I too am 48, and live alone, but also have fantastic friends who have been volunteering left and right to help with anything I need post-surgery. I will be staying with my mom for a few days after leaving the hospital. It's true I'll need her help, but it'll also give her a chance to be mom, which, with my totally independent self, she doesn't get to do much. It will be strange to be staying in my childhood bedroom which is exactly as it was when I moved out! LOL I just pray that I hear that my cyst is benign, and that life can proceed as normal. The not knowing is excruciating. Coming to this site, seeing women experiencing the same worries, concerns, and fears, and ultimately being okay, that is the best medicine that can be prescribed. As soon as I'm back home and have access to my laptop, I will drop a line and let everyone know how it went. Wish me luck!!!!
