Ovarian cyst and prolapse

I have 2 questions that if anyone could answer would be great.

I'm due for laparoscopy next week to remove blood filled 9cm ovarian cyst, I want to know if they give you another ultrasound first, to check if it's still there and hasn't magically disappeared? Or do they just cut you open to see?

Also does anyone know if there is any connection to a uterine prolapse, bad hemmoroids and a large ovarian cyst, I had terrible hemmoroids during pregnancy and a uterine prolapse straight after I gave birth, i ended up having hemmoroid surgery and the prolapse either became less sensitive or retreated a little bit but in the last week both have come back with vengeance and I'm really uncomfortable down there. It makes sense to me that the pressure could cause it to re occur but can't find much info on it.

Thanks

Hi Charlotte, I had an ovarian cyst, about the same size for a few years.

When I was told I needed a prolapse repair, I asked if the cyst could be removed at the same time while I was under.

I had an ultrasound two weeks before surgery to make sure it hadn't gone.

Then when I went in, the surgeon removed my ovary and tube on that side, plus a lot of scar tissue from a hysterectomy nearly thirty years ago.

I didn't have problems with recovery, the prolapse repair was harder to get over.

I have haemorrhoids as well, mug don't think they are connected.

    Good luck with your op!

Thanks Laura, I am booked in for cystectomy next week but not had any follow up ultrasound mind you they only did the ultrasound where they found the cyst about a month ago so perhaps they don't feel the need. Unfortunately the prolapse symptoms have only come back in the last week so I haven't told the gyane, doubt there is much she can do on the day of surgery. She is supposed to be doing a hyteroscopy at the same time. Just hope surgery doesn't make the prolapse worse. You must have had a bad prolapse to need surgical repair, mine is sore and uncomfortable but looking at pictures online it must only be a grade 1 as its not protruding completely out.

Can I ask how you had a prolapse if you had a hysterectomy before that, I thought is was the womb that falls down or did you have a different pelvic prolapse.

It was a posterior prolapse, a Rectocele repair that I had repaired, so two ops both done differently, one laparoscopy and one vaginally.

He had to remove the ovary, as he couldn't just remove the cyst.

I wouldn't think your op would affect a prolapse, it will probably help, as ovarian cysts can drag down and can get quite large and cause problems.

      Better out than in!

Hi Charlotte. I too have had a cystoscopy and bi lateral salpingo oophrectomy, (removal of ovaries and tubes). My cyst was not malignant but i had the removals due to my age, I asked for them to be taken at the same time as I'm 73 and now no chance of any more ovarian cysts anyway, I no longer needed them! I had a hysterectomy and bladder repair 34 years ago. My prolapse is what they call vaginal vault, it's occurred in the laast few years as my tissues are very fragile now with the ageing process. I also have a posterior prolapse or Rectocele for same reason. You can find more info on this website, look at top of this page, "Womens Health", then on that page look up genito urinary prolapse. There's lots of stuff to read. My consultant did not do the vaginal repair at the same time as the cyst removal, as repair is done vaginally and the cystoscopy is keyhole from the abdomen. Hope this helps but ask you consultant and registrars when you go in for more info, they were very helpful to me. Best wishes Pollyanna UK rolleyes

    Hi Charlotte

I had my first ultra sound after pushing my GP for it as I felt my pelvic pain wasnt normal. The ultra sound found two cysts on each of my ovaries. They werent significant and still small then but she recommended to my GP another follow up ultrasound to see if it grew as she could tell then the type of cyst it was.

Then I pushed for  my GP to refer me to a gynacologist who specialise on this type of condition. It took me couple of months to get to see one due priority in health system here in NZ. I asked the gynolocology for another ultersound and it came that cysts grown fast. Then I was booked for an MRI so they can see clearly to find out that one cyst stuck to my rectal area which explain my constipation every time I have my period.

I suggest if you feel ok to wait for another ultra sound as you asked but the risk is the waiting can delay the operation. I believe my situation is complicated because they didnt take much notice of my constipation which was an issue too. I think it is complicated that there is no sure answer as every individual is different. I think you listen to your body and address with your GP or specialist the main issue and ask him questions. I wonder if you can feel that it is still there cause I can feel my cysts is still there. If I put pressure like tight clothes and seat belt I feel the cysts pushing on my nerves causing mild pain. If you dont feel the cyst then maybe a second ultra sound might be ok but discuss with surgeon or GP. You need to be careful as you dont want to be put back on the que?

Also some people say the only way for then to see what is actually happening their is laparoscopy. I am a christian I always pray and lift my concern and worries to God as he says in the bible to acknowledge our ways to him and he will direct our path.

I have my appointment tomorrow with gynacologist to discuss my operation which is likely a major one involving my bowl.

    I hope this helps .
