Ovarian Dermoid Cyst - Very Painful!!

I started having pain in my lower left side in October of last year, it wasnt too bad so I didnt go to the doctors until january as I thought it may go away. I suspected I may have a Cyst and told the doctor and he refered me for a scan. I had a scan in mid Feb and I was diagnosed with a Dermoid Ovarian Cyst, it was about 3.5cm. I had another scan the other day and it has grown to 5cm. I have been refered to a gynocologist and been told that its going to take 20 weeks. I went back to the doctors because its causing me a lot of pain, but he said just to take pain killers (which doesnt really help) Iv been getting really really tired lately and doctor thinks that it could be related to the cyst.
The pain is getting me down, today I was in agony, I had a really sharp pain and I couldnt move, I was in tears. Im not going to be seen for another 4 months at least and I dont know what to do! Im worried its going to grow bigger.
Has anyone else been through similar experiences? How can I relieve the pain, Iv tired pain killers and warm baths but nothing works. Im only little and worried about how big the cyst is going to get, how quickly do these things grow? Mine got 1.5cm bigger in 5 weeks, so Im hoping it might stop for a bit!
Thank you

I.wouldnt make up being in this much pain if that is what she is thinking i cant afford time off college! When i went about my pain 2 month ago my gp was going on about my knees when i was there for my abdominal he just wasnt listening to me at all. I have had so many different doctors and they have all said different things; its my period, its my bowels, i have ibs and one doctor said sometimes these things go unexplained.
I had my ultrasound on thursday and no-one has bothered to contact me or to talk to me and answer my questions! Im.hoping someone will this week, dont be afraid to.go if they are going to make you better then go and see what they have to say it will be for the best. I still havent had my period but i think it could be because of the cyst but im.not sure
yes still go and see what they have to say and if they ask just mention that you are on your period, same for me! No-one understands so im glad i found others who are in my position and who i can talk to as its all i think about!

I was brave today, and went to see a gynaecologist! He saw my result, and told me, probably I need a surgery, and he will refer me to his collegue, who is a specialist of that.
Also I had a ca 125 done today, which came back result of 21.
Hopefully I will se that other doctor this week, lets see what he will say!

I am 25 and have been diagnosed with a 9cm Dermoid cyst on my left ovary. I originally went to the doctor as I suspected I had polycystic ovaries as I had not been having periods for 2 years and started to grow excess body hair.
I am having keyhole surgery to remove the cyst on the 9th December and I am absolutely petrified, the hospital have told me that it possible I could lose my left ovary which scares me as I want children in the future. Have any of you had this type of surgery and still managed to naturally conceive a baby?

Please don't be petrified! Millions of women have had this procedure, and gone on to conceive completely naturally, even when one ovary has been removed. Keyhole surgery is the least invasive, - I had the same as you, a 9 X 13 dermoid cyst attached to my ovary. I walked out of hospital the following day. I'm over 10 years older than you, and am trying for a baby. There is no reason specifically relating to the surgery I had, that would prevent me from conceiving. The surgeon was very pleased, I remained intact (didn't lose an ovary), and with keyhole, the only trace of a scar I can now see is just at the top of my pubic area, and very faint, -about my little finger nail's length. Plus, when you wake up from your procedure you'll initially feel pretty wonderful,- not only because of the relief, but also because of the morphine dose you'll receive to protect you from the pain ;o).
I came on here, worried about pain I had a couple of weeks ago, and am in the process of checking out. During my doc visits I've been reassured. It may be taking me a little longer to conceive because of my age, and perhaps because one ovary functions better than the other.
Contrary to your experience I always had regular periods, before and since my op, so, of course you need to persist in finding out what's going on there. Strangely though, I had nearly a year without them when I was a year younger than you, and they came back of their own accord!
Bodies are wonderful, but confusing things! Please don't panic, I'm sure you'll be in safe hands,

Thank you for that, it has put my mind at ease. I've found the NHS pretty sketchy with information about my fertility issues in general. But fingers crossed when the cyst has been removed things will start working again in the way they should.
I hope everything works itself out for you too!
I can't help panicking as this will be the first surgery I have ever had but hopefully everything will go smoothly.

I had a dermoid cyst removed 5 weeks ago via a bikini line incision. Both my ovaries remained intact and whilst the first week was painful and frustrating, I'm now back to driving & doing pretty much everything I was although a little more slowly!!
I do feel fraudulent when I read all your stories as I had no pain but ended up with a 16cm dermoid!!
My sister was recently experieincing similar syptoms to some of you ladies & pushed her GP for a scan, luckily all was clear with her, they've put it done to her ovulating?!
My advise to to anyone is push your GP, I was extremely fortunate to have had a lady GP who referred me for a scan on my first visit as I was suffering from heavy periods & she thought I might have a fibroid.....let alone a bloody huge cyst!! Even my gynae said that I was lucky as he would not have referred me if I'd gone to him with the heavy periods!! As marvellous as the male GPs/surgeons are I really don't hink they understand the pain we go through with periods etc...
Keep pestering ladies....you will get answers.
Good luck xx

A question for those of you who have had keyhole surgery and ovaries and dermoid cyst removed, are you still tired. I started to feel better in the 4th week and thought hurrah, but this 6th week I have been feeling really awful, so tired, no energy and a bit tearful as so disappointed to be feeling worse again. I have started to work again but surprised if that is the reason as rest plenty in between.
Have any of you felt the same? Sorry for moaning but always nice to hear the experiences of those of you who already had op and what you are going through.
Thanks ladies, tearful too cos Mandela died today, what an amazing person!!

It's almost 8 weeks since my op & I feel fine & back to normal now.
Maybe you're coming down with something else, there are loads of viruses around.
Hope you start to feel better soon.

Maybe you are right, do feel I am fighting off a cold or something, but nothing has materialised, just frustrated when I was feeling better
Did you still have bruising after 6 wks, I have a faded bruise around my belly button and it is sore if I press it, so obviously insides must be still healing?
So nice to get a reply when you have a moan
thanks
