Overactive thyroid.

Hello there, I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid last week and my GP started me on Carbimazole 20mg, but on Sunday just gone I was extremely breathless with my heart racing. I ended up at A&E where I was given Bisoprolol 2.5 mg to be taken every morning. The endo`s at the hospital saw me and believe I have Graves disease, so also gave me some drops for my eyes. The Endo doctor raised my Carbimazole to twice a day and said I`d feel much better when I go to her clinic in about 6 weeks time. However I feel so incredibly tired and wonder if this was normal. I`ve no energy or want to do anything. I`m 63 yrs old so wondered if my age has anything to do with this tiredness as I thought `hyper` would leave me with boundless energy. Thanks in advance for anyone who answers me- all help is gratefully appreciated. x

hi may you stay in good health with the blessing of allah (god)

i am not a dr but a patient expert in this field as i had overactive thyriod 6 years ago.

all the symptoms you describe are all normal

tiredness i used to fall asleep everywhere i went

heart racing is normal, the trick to control your heart racing is to start doing breathing control. As soon as you know your heart is going to start racing. in from your nose out from your mouth BUT the key is breath from your stomach.

lol at graves disease the dr. hide that worrd all thyriod illness are call graves disease. but nothing to worry about.

i was 26 when i was diognosed mine was overactive aswell. you will prob feel back to normal after 1 to 2 months. if i could be of any help let me know.

I also had racing heart and covered with sweat all the time.  I lost 25 lbs in 25 days.  I started on carbinmazole right away but it took about 2-3 weeks to calm everything down.  I was also put on propananol to slow down my heart.  My GP said it was like I was running a marathon 24 hours a day.  Very hard on your heart!  I was very energetic, but my brain went foggy.  I had a lot of trouble concentrating.  After about 3 weeks I started to feel more like myself.  I had it at 45, I can only imagine at 63 the symptoms could be worse.  My best advice is to look after yourself and rest as much as you can.  It is only temporary.  The meds will kick in within 7-9 weeks after starting.  Good Luck!

Thank you Rose, I`m just over a week after diagnosis and carbinmazole and the beta blocker and I `think` I feel a tinsy bit better. My problem is a lack of patience, which I expect everyone else has felt too. I haven`t felt well for quite some time, which I think may have been Graves all of the time. I`m excited and looking forward to being myself again.  Hearing others experiences on here has been a great help. Thank you all.  xx
