Oxycodone for Chronic Back pain and now knee pain

Posted , 3 users are following.

I have CHronic Back pain (Degenerative Disc Disease) which can not be corrected by surgery.  I go to a Pain Management Doctor and get a prescription of Oxycodone 10mg 4 times a day.  I have also had Gastric bypass which I know sometimes I don't get all the meds I take.  I have had them do drug testing with this practice and it does not show the meds in my system so they will take another test to make sure it shows up and they must have shown it on the 2nd test.  I am 60 years old and seem to have Arthritis and a Meniscus Tear (surgery planned in 3 weeks for the Meniscus tear).  Anyway My pain management doc is stating I am at the max level he can prescribe.  I am in Charlotte NC if that makes a difference.  This level is not handling my pain.  What can I do other than move to a state where maybe I could get medical marijuana or maybe more oxycodone.  anything to help me manage this pain.

    Hi Involve.

Really sorry to hear you are suffering.

I too have Degenerative Disc Desease in my back & was given Oxycodone.

All I will say is please be very very careful about how much you take as it is very addictive.

It messed my life up big time.

I have been clean of it now for just over a year but still suffer from pain daily in my back.

It's a no win situation because they won't give me any strong medication for my back because of the problem I had previously. Even though it's a well known fact that Oxy is very addictive & it's been in all the media over the years about the problems it's caused for many thousands.

My Dr kept increasing my dose due to the fact that it would work at first, then my body got used to it, then they would give me a higher dose & so on.

I got up to around 320mgs per day which was 20mg x4, 4 x per day. After this I was put on Oxycontin which is the sustained release version. From there on it just kept increasing because the pain relief would only last around an hour, 2 hours at the very most. Even though the manufacturer claimed 1 Pill eased pain for 12 hours!!!!!

In the end i was addicted to close on 1500mgs per day which is why I had to get off the stuff. I'm lucky to still be here!

I'm in th UK so it's different over here.

I'm really really sorry I cannot give you the advise you're looking for, only to say your story is similar to mine & I would hate my worst enemy to go through the hell I went through for 8yrs & still am.

Please take care & I wish you all the very best.

    Hi

    This is for reply .

My problems are increasing since I've been on Oxy. If I had 1 bit of advice for anyone who was thinking of going on it .. I would say try somethink else first .. okay it does reduce pain .. but there's to many negatives in terms of the slow release not lasting 12 hours . The effects on you mental state/memory/toilet issues/appetite/desire to leave your property and live a semi normal life . And that's just a few things I've noticed that have changed my life. Also relationship breakdowns and the way you see things changed . Your not rational and can fly off the handle in a split second ... moods swings .. and I've also noticed I've got an increase in anxiety / panic attacks recently .. It's got to be all related to the oxy.. So anyone out there thinking of taking it for long term pain . Try other options and make oxy your last choice .

    Regards

    Everybody ha e a blessed day ..

      Hi Danny.

Good to hear from you mate!

I was prescribed 800mg per day of this stuff from my then GP. It really has destroyed my life as I once knew it!

Haven't taken any for just over 1 year now. Replaced with methadone to stop withdrawals which I'm also reducing, my goal is to be methadone free by Christmas.

My memory, will to live, hobbies, socialising, sex drive which I'm on hormone replacement for all ended 5yrs ago now.

Just trying to get my life back mate, one day at a time!!

Keep your chin up mate, don't let it beat you!!

Take care & keep in touch!

      And

Please private message me Danny if you need a friend to talk to my mate.

The one thing I needed when I was taking enough heroin (sorry, I meant Oxycontin) to kill 5 men plus 3 horses, was someone to talk to who could help but, there was know one. The drugs & alcohol team were useless. I had no one at all.

      Danny listen mate.

I'm here 24/7 if you ever need to talk to someone who's been there & got the t-shirt mate. I'm here for you as I know exactly what you've been through & are going through. You are not alone mate!!!

      Ritchie.
