pace maker and metropolis

I have a Pacemaker that is only used intermittently to speed my pulse up and prevent flatlining.  After my umpteenth episode of AF and many cardiofversions and three ablations I am now not in AF but as a preventative I am supposed to take 25mg of Metropolol twice a day. I find this slows my heart down (58bpm) and I feel tired.  I cannot see the point in slowing down my heart rate with a drug and speeding it up with a PM. Is Metropolol meant to be a preventative.  I am thinking of stopping it and just make sure I don't push my heart rate up too far with exercise of which I do quite a bit. Doctors seem to have different opinions, perhaps no-one really knows. I just hate AF so do not want to bring it on.  Any opinions out there?

Don't know about metropolol but may be similar to other drugs. You may be getting it to stop AF and other arrhythmias etc, however it also slows the heart rate generally (see beta blockers, bisoprolol does the same). One of the side effects is reduced resting BPM, this is countered by and health improved by pacemaker

Personally on bisoprolol with 55bpm also awaiting pacemaker.

Keep going with the preventative medication, it's protecting you in lots of ways. You get used to not being able to do quite as much as before, but don't let it stop you.

    Hope this helps
