Pain 10 weeks post hip replacement

It is now 10 weeks since my THR. I have been doing the exercises regularly, following all precautions and walking as much as possible but still use 1 crutch when out walking. I have been walking twice a day increasing the distance gradually but I am having alot of lower back pain recently when walking making each step hard. I also am getting groin pain when standing and first moving which I didnt have in the first few weeks. I am taking ibuprofen each day and paracetemol but today have gone back to cocodamol which hasnt made much difference. Things were going well in the first few weeks apart from sleeping on my back. I just wish I hadnt had the surgery as I expected to be at a better stage than this by now. I have had both knees replaced previously and those operations were much better than this despite everyone saying hips are easier than knees. I just feel like giving up. i would have been better getting a mobility scooter.

surgeon just said it could take time. occurring due to over compensation pre op and delayed op due to Covid when mobility was severely limited.

I know how you feel I have been feeling the same. I often wish I hadn't had the replacement. I got an earlier appointment with the consultant (6 weeks instead of 7 week appointment) as my knee/leg were pulling in when walking. As soon as he saw me he said I needed physiotherapy. He said this can happen with an anterior operation? I was there on Friday, she has given me a complete new set of exercises with resistance bands to strengthen my glutes and quads. I have terrible knee and groin pain and she said stick with these for 3 weeks and have a follow-up visit to see if there is an improvement. I am 8 weeks post THR anterior. I can't walk very far and with one walking stick but regularly do all the exercises and walk as much as I can, She said less time but often. I regularly go up and down the steps too but can't walk properly upwards, I have to drag my leg up but am ok going down. Ask your gp for an appointment to see a physiotherapist. They are doing face to face appointments after an initial telephone appointment. Good luck.

I understand it can be frustrating when you don't see the results right away. I had the same thoughts when I was 10 weeks out, 12 weeks out and 14 weeks out. I'm 6 months post-op and have been going to physiotherapy weekly; I am still working to strengthen my gluteal muscles as I lost plenty of muscle over the past few years from walking with a cane and not using the right muscles. My advice to you is to continue going to physiotherapy, and continue to stretch. It takes time and not everyone's recovery is the same. I think it's also important to listen to your body and take it easy some days. Things will get better, it just might take a little more time than you thought!

Lower back pain can mean so many things, including tight hamstrings. Are you stretching after your walks?
