I think you should still be doing exercises at home even if you are not going to physio department.

I had TKR 3 years ago.

Up until the last 6 months I had been doing exercises regularly at home.

Bought myself wome ankle weights from sports shop and jujst got on with it.

Not rigorous but just what I used to do at phsio sessions.

The last 6 months I have not done knee exercises as I have not been well. Had gallstones and eventually had my gallbladder removed 5 weeks ago.

I was just saying to afriend of mine today that I ,must get back gradually to doing knee exercises again now all that is over.

Take care and keep in touch

without doing excersises you could end up with a stiff knee .unless you fell which you probably didnt or you would have said id say get excersising it i always found that after doing my excersises properly after it was bending better and pain eased .dont be afraid of it.   they are strong enough to support your weight so you wont do any harm by pushing the bend abit which will ease the pain doing no physio is asking for trouble ,we all worry about our knee from time to time so try and relax

Still need to keep stretching that scar tissue and strengthening those muscles. Try standing on one leg - the operated one and then the other. It can be done waiting for the kettle and really helps strengthen the legs.

It's a rollacoaster isn't it Andrea.  Once we realise that it is not like any other op. Most ops get steadily better but not this one.  Up one day down the next without any obvious reason.  Hope you are back on the up road soon.  Sue S.

Andrea we are all different. It's so hard not to compare ourselves to others isn't it?

I'm 15 weeks post and incredibly lucky that I can do a lot of my work from home. I've been doing that for about 6 weeks. I only work about 4 hours a day as I need to keep doing exercises to stop my leg seizing up. I went into my office yesterday (my boss drove me as I can't manage the 40 min drive yet....that's without any traffic). It has proven to me that I'm not ready for it yet. I tried to take regular breaks to exercise (I went into the boardroom...if that table could talk it would have something to say about my leg being hoisted on it!!!) but I was in agony by the end of the day and today I feel like I've gone back in time. Im exhausted and struggling to move my leg. I've had to crack open the big boy pain killers that I've not taken for several weeks.

I'm currently signed off until the end of June but I need further surgery and an MUA so just waiting on my date. I will try to do another day next week as I did really enjoy it but I will need to take it much easier. I still have to use crutches too due to on-going issues with the leg.

Only you know if you're ready. Don't let anyone try to force you back. Start with a couple of hours and see how that goes. Whilst my work is office based it still has a long walk from the car park, then to the toilets etc. I didn't take this into account and yours sounds much more physical. You need to build up to that.

Try not to worry. Just be honest with HR, legally they need to allow you to do a phased return.

Let me know how you get on.

You have to be honest with yourself and your employer.

Not sure that I would have gone back to that kind of work at 12 weeks.

You do not want to go back and do yourslelf any more damage. You would then be off again for even longer.

      Give yourself time.

Take care and keep in touch

As others have said, keep going with your exercises. I'm 15 weeks post and waiting for further surgery to straighten & an MUA. However I was told I must keep doing my exercises to keep the leg moving as the muscles still need to strengthen. I was told that the exercises would generally need to be done for months as the prothesis could stiffen up without them. Worth working them in several times to your day.

Hi Jenfid. I'm 16 days post-op. For the fiirst 8 or 9 days it was really bad, sore, stiff, very tired. In the last five days or so I seem to have turned a corner. Still a long way to go but I've got the swelling down a lot and can bend my knee, albeit only about 50% or 60% so far. I've been doing the exercises at home, as often as seven or eight times per day so don't depend on physios as they can't book me in for another two weeks. I also use ice packs (frozen peas) four or five times per day. I'm very encouraged so much so that I'll be heading to the pub today in the back of my son's estate car! I'm still on Co-Codamol (8 per day) and Longtec (10mg, twice per day). Only down side right now is I don't get much sleep at all.
