Hi,
had a left THR in AUGUST 2018. Had pains off and on for months. was feeling really good walking about 7-10 miles a day. However, lately (the last 5 days) i have have bad pain in the outside of the leg right below the trochanter. Just wondering if it is still possible to over do it this far along? Also wondering when over doing it is no linger a concern?

i am 10 weeks too and saw my surgeon again on tuesday ad am experiencing pain in thigh and calf and groin
had x ray which showed all was good so it is overuse and muscles and nerves still mending and repairing .
he advised me to use one stick again and am going back in 6 weeks
he was not concerned and said is early days

Hi Doodle, thats great to hear, i have to say at the weekend I was doing a little more in the garden lifting etc that I thought maybe a little too far as i felt so good . Next day I was experiencing some groin pain and like you thought I may have overdone it a little. Its very easy to forget what has been done when everything seems to be working so well. take it easy .

Hi it sounds like a lot of walking but then we are told walking is good for us after hip replacement, if you are young then it might be acceptable to do but if you are in your 60/70s it could be a bit much? I would speak to your doctor or physiotherapist hopefully it will calm down if you slow down a bit best of luck

hi i am nearly 4 weeks into my 2nd THR. i have been itching to exercise more walk more and get better quick. But my doctor and surgeon said no. That is why they recommend 12xweek recovery.
sounds like you have done too much too soon

Hi Jacqui,
Doing more does not mean you get better quicker. Slow but sure tends to work far better. You read on here people walking so many miles or doing this or that, then, sometimes recovery goes down hill. At four weeks I only walked forty minutes in one go, five and a half months before joining pilates, step aerobics and zumba classes. Take care of your hip, the healing inside will go at it's own speed. good luck with your recovery.

That sounds a lot of walking to me, if you are an older patient.
My hip replacement was a second operation, as the first one failed, so had to have THR. That was three months ago. But mine was as a result of trauma, not wear and tear.
My surgeon told me not to overdo it as I had had three months muscle wastage, and it would take six months to heal.
So, I am walking for about 25 mins each day, and get muscle aches in my thigh( where I have metalwork) and that is enough for now. I shall slowly build it up.
It is possible to dislocate the whole thing if you walk to far. A lady in the next bed to me did that eight months post op.

Sounds like you might be overdoing it. I would cut back and use ice for pain. I'm almost 3 months post-op and got full clearance last Monday. Am back at yoga and the other day did a combination of 4.9 miles with my 2 dogs, but it was a few walks throughout the day.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh. I had this about 6 months after my revision operation. I was advised by a qualified physio who has had Double THR's, to get a Muscle roller like this - quite inexpensive on certain bidding websites.
It has worked wonders for me.

Hi,
I'm worried too as I had my THR( right) on November 29th last year at Epsom. After three weeks I was walking normally and at ten weeks got rid of my last remaining stick. My Physio was amazed at how well I was doing as I had no pain and very little tenderness over the scar, but did warn me that I was doing all the things at three months that most people do at six months and to take it easy and take gentle strolls.
I did this as far as I could , but have a 98 year old husband with Alzheimer's to look after and he does not understand why I can't do as much as before.
Three weeks ago I started to get pain in my good leg, reported it to my physio, who comes at odd intervals and she told me it was normal and to cut down on activities( not that I am doing much), but this morning my operated leg gave way and I had a terrific spasm of pain down to my knee and foot. After a few minutes I was able to move again, but only just managed to stop myself falling. I have rubbed it hard with balmosa and taken pain killers, but am wondering if I should tell anyone. My physio discharged me from visits last week, but said she will keep my notes open. Incidentally the surgeon who saw me for my follow up at thirteen weeks was pleased with the operation.
I find sleeping on my back difficult and often wake up on my good side as the scar is still too tender to sleep on.
Any advice or similar experiences would be much appreciated.

In your case it sounds like a muscle over use injury. Rally easy to due 3 months out. Take it easy for a couple of weeks as much as you can and it should resolve itself. Takes a year or longer to strengthen the muscles that were cut or stretched.
