Pain across top and outside of left foot

Hello folks. My left foot is sometimes so painful I can hardly walk. It's worse after resting and worse when on a level surface or going downhill (going uphill is easier!) The pain seems to go across the top on the bend between foot and leg and continue around the ankle on the outside.

It is not tender to touch and I don't think it looks swollen so I am reluctant to bother the GP - especially as when I go it is bound to be fine!! But of course he won't see me painfully hobbling at a crawl when I take the dog out - unfortunately downhill initially.

I can only think it's a ligament issue or maybe even the beginnings of arthritis (I'm 64).

Has anyone any ideas on what it might be or any self help suggestions before I bite the bullet and see the GP? Or should I make the first call a chiropodist?

I had some special insoles supplied by a chropodist ages ago to improve posture which I tend not to use - so I'm trying them before seeing a doctor to see if it alleviates the pain. Meanwhile I found a solution to the pain walking down a slope. It doesn't hurt half as much if I walk backwards! So if anyone sees a woman walking backwards downhill that's me...
