Pain after 3 years

Hello,

I had LTHR three years ago and RTHR almost 8 months ago. Everything went well after the operations with minimum problem. Two days ago, I felt pain in my left hip, probably where the stem is.. I could walk or move but had continuous pain for two days.

I didn't fall or made a wrong movement before this pain, it came out after sitting for about an hour(( As you can guess, I was very disappointed because I didin't know what would follow this pain. Had anyone been in a similiar situation?

What are your experiences after 3-4 years?

Thanks,

Desire

Hello Desire, i had my right hip replaced 2 years and was totally free of pain, but now the past few weeks I have been in increasingly awful pain. I assume I have to go through my g.p. again, which took forever before I saw the consultant. I hope your situation may right itself in a couple of days, sorry I cant offer any advice but I wisb you all the very best.

    Hello Desire-

I'm preparing for THR surgery later this Spring and looking forward to a better quality of life without pain or range of motion restrictions.  Friends of mine who have difficulties after surgery acknowledge they had generally disregarded any ongoing physical exercise to maintain their muscular support of the joint which led to pain and I am trying to assess what best exercise regime I can assume will be necessary.  You mention the pain occurred after an hour of sitting.  What is your daily activity/exercise program?  Do you walk daily and how far?  Do you find yoga/stretching/pilates beneficial?  I'd be especially interested in learning what if any activities/exercises you enjoyed prior to surgery you can no longer participate in, if any.

      Dear Jim

I think going on my experiences of a primary hip replacement and a revision after twenty years that by the time you are walking strongly without any crutches or sticks and without any limping that you are at the point where the exercises can be tailed off.

I think I stopped after nine months with my revision. With my primary I was not given any exercises nor did any because I was not aware of the need but I walked and walked.

      Cheers Richard

      Hi Richard,

Hope this finds you well with the ankle healing.  I look forward to walking and walking, mile after mile, I miss it.  To better days!

      Cheers,

      Dear Jim

Thanks for inquiring about my new ankle joint. Well it seems that all is going well though I have an emergency appointment with my surgeon this Friday afternoon to make sure that all is well.

This is because after a recent shop trip for basic groceries which involved carrying them back home via a bus I started getting some pains from my ankle and at times half way up and at the front of my leg. The weight of the entire load in the rucksack was fifteen pounds so not huge for me.

I'm not unduly worried because I can wiggle my toes without discomfort and can walk pain free but as a precaution I got in touch with my surgeon's nurse who set up the appointment with my surgeon.

Sorry for the long winded reply but I felt it was justified in the interests of clarity.

Jim I'm sure your walking will continue to improves as the weather encourages you out more!

      All the best. Richard

      Hello Richard-

Glad to hear your ankle is on the mend even with precautions.  That you're walking around on it and not laid up sounds like you're mending.  I can hardly take a few brief sentences as long winded however.  You've waded through some of my page long replies in the forum that practically need foot notes so I think your standard of long winded should be adjusted appropriately.  Best wishes.

      Jim

Thanks Jim.  I'm just a bit aware that I tend to give quite full explanations and this is the hip rather than the ankle forum!

      All the best, Richard

Two and a half years on, and I thought I was doing well pain free, but now I have severe pain in the pelvis area .... spreading across my back and other thigh.  Just when I was least expecting it sad

      Dear Graham

What an absolute PITA for you especially after all that you have gone through. Can you remember doing anything that could have set it off?

      Cheers Richard

I had it BEFORE I started golf, going to the gym and a holiday in Krakow.

I had hoped that the gym workouts would help with it and some weight loss (been putting on the pounds in the winter due to inactivity).

Will give it another go next week with a few painkillers to see how it goes, otherwise i suppose it's another trip to London for yet another X-Ray.

A real PITA quite literally .... especially when I cough, across both sides from the bottom of the spine and down the operated thigh.

Nothing to do but get on with it and try to get better once again.

I'll bounce back ... somehow - just have to lose some weight right now to help ease it a bit, hence the gym workouts, which might just be aggravating it confused

      Dear Graham

Are you absolutely certain that this is not back related? If it is a back problem it could quite easily cause pain in other parts of your body.

      Cheers Richard

Looks like it was the holiday - I feel so much better today cool

I think it was doing so much walking on cobbled streets, combined with an over-soft bed.

Looking forward to the gym tomorrow biggrin
