Pain after 8 weeks

Hi guys!

Hope you can help! I'm 56, 8 weeks post op total hip replacement... was doing great until a few days ago when I walked quite quickly - unaided - and the leg pain has returned. I don't understand why.? Ok sitting but walking is with a limp now...

my consultant is away for another week or so but I was wondering if anyone encountered this. Last Thursday ( 22nd) I was pain free and now I can't walk without a lot of discomfort in the operated leg..

I was back driving, walking, working no problem and after one brisk walk I'm freaking out!!!

Thanks to everyone who reads this and maybe can throw some light on this issue till I return to surgeon!

I would think that you may have pushed yourself too hard. Back off for a few days and see if it gets better. I had days where I thought I was totally out of the woods and I really wasn't...sometimes are bodies talk to us.

    Hi Ailish,

Don't worry too much! Recovery consists of steps forward and backward. You most likely strained the muscle so it's screaming at you. Continue with light exercise and give it a couple days....you ll be back where you were. Don't be surprised if it happens again. It takes 6-8 months to completely heal. Just know the new joint is solid and strong. Your pain is muscle. Stay strong and best of luck to you.

Sometimes it feels like 2 steps forward 1 step back. I am only 6 weeks post op, just beginning to walk unaided, but have already encountered a couple of times where I walked weird or did too much and pain returns. Just spend a couple days taking it easy, ice if you need too, but mostly at your stage, just take it easy, sit in your recliner and rest with just occasional walking when necessary. You may only need a day, but maybe two. I somehow managed a back spasm that kept me down for 3 days but back doing the recovery process now. I'm not driving yet, wanted to wait until my 8 week restrictions are over. I have good days and bad at this stage, but most are good.  I'm a bit different because I was still recovering from LFKR when I had my LFHR. The restrictions cause a lot of stiff knee days but I will be able to ride my recumbent bike soon and that always loosens that stiff knee. I have no stiffness in my hip. It is doing very very well except for the achyness I get if I over do it. I still go back and forth between using m cane and not. My therapist said to not go without it when I leave the house yet, hopefully soon.

It's your hip telling you too much too soon. I remember first time I did that. Your muscles take up to 2yrs to heal. Even now 21 months on. If I forget and do something I shouldn't it gips.

    It will settle xx

Look like you have done to much. Rest for few days and see how you go.

Heeling take time. Im nerly 9 months after left hip replecement and if I do to much the Hip is teling me to take it easy. You probably over done it .

    Good luck ad hug.

Thanks for all your help guys!

I think the general theme is I've been overdoing things a bit!

Will take all advise and slow down - there is no way I'm going backwards.

It is easy to forget what one has been through and expect to be back to ' normal' in a relatively quick time!

    Thank you again!!!

I have found this forum very helpful pre and post op to measure recovery!

Just a quick question one and all... pain still in my leg 10 days later. ( problem 10 weeks in) Surgeon called me to say I most likely strained something ( can't pronounce what he said) but it should be better by now! It's not..

When they say ' rest' what do you guys take from that.. bed? Not walking?

I've been continuing ' life' as normal just not going out for walks etc.. I'm still in work and walking around...

    Thanks!

Over worked! it takes 6 mos for acceptable satisfaction and 1 yr for nearly 100% where I am at now. Most of us are different at healing and progressing. I see fast walking as bad as slow jogging. Too much stress way too soon. Icing always helped me along with some Alleve. Keep up daily stretching and leg exercises for life. Squats are excellent. Those muscles that were moved around will need lots of time to calm down.

    Good Luck
