Pain after BM?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone else here suffer with prolonged pain following a BM? I have IBS-C so my frequency of BMs is a bit all over the place. Without a doubt, the worst symptom I experience is pain. I could possibly cope with chronic constipation if it didn't cause me pain but it does. If I go to the toilet, my bowel will feel sore for a long time afterwards, sometimes 1-2 days. I should say this is abdominal rather than rectal pain. More recently the pain is down my left side though it has been on my right and around my belly button occasionally. This type of pain occurs only after a BM which makes me think it is a mechanical issue, maybe spasms or gas displacing? I don't know. It feels like somebody has scraped a scoured along the length of my descending colon. Also the pain is worse the bigger the stool is (sorry to be tmi).

Does anyone get this, know what might be causing it or take anything for it? I'm at my wits end with it.

Thank you.

I have IBS but my pain improves after a bowel movement.  However, everyone is different.  Try more fibre in your diet like oranges, prunes, prune juice and grapes and use stool softeners/laxatives.  Perhaps ask your doctor about this symptom.

I trried Movicil for short term use just to get my bowel moving.  It took a few days though to work mainly because I took a low dose.

I found Movicol twice a day eventually got my bowel working but afterwards I had to stop because I was running to the loo.  I continued with the fruit and in the end that was enough.

I concur with this from Pip. Turkey can sometimes stop my body from working I have noticed from previous years so this year I took 2 movicol and worked well over Christmas Day, Boxing Day and 27th which all I needed them for but on 31st when I had not been eating turkey or rich food something was still kicking in and between 9am and 6pm my body was all over the place and only made it to 9.30pm before I was in bed. I have been fine since but this is not uncommon after taking movicol but also difficult to fully identify as I tend to eat different foods but by the 28th onwards I was back to eating the same foods as usual.

My mum has very bad constipation because of dementia and needs Movicol regularly.  Sometimes she ends up with diarrhoea because she needs so much laxative. She does get fresh fruit drinks as well to help.

Bought apricots over Christmas for my porridge and all I can say is they definitely helped as a laxative. I am in pain beforehand after visiting the loo I improve.

The duodenum precedes the jejunum and ileum and is the shortest part of the small intestine, where most chemical digestion takes place. In humans, the duodenum is a hollow jointed tube about 25–38 cm (10–15 inches) long connecting the stomach to the jejunum. The pain is that your Duodenum is inflamed.
