Pain after hip replacement

Posted , 5 users are following.

I have had both hips replaced. I sailed through the first op on my right hip.

The left hip op was not so good, there was a big length discrepancy and the surgeon had to operate a week later to remove the joint and replace it. My legs are now the same length.

17 months on and I am experiencing hip pain, in the groin, in the femur, and the outer extremity of

the hip with occasional swelling there too.

Has anyone else had this post surgery and if so what causes it? Should I be worried? It was a Corail hip uncemented.

Did you have a 1 year follow-up.  If not I suggest you ask for a referral and X-ray or scan because it may be problems with the interface between bone and prosthesis.  Uncemented stems can take longer to settle in but after 17 months they would expect it to be well-integrated.  See your GP and explore your options including physiotherapy.

    Hope things improve

I had my right hip done 11 months, no problem whatsoever.  I had my left hip done 8 weeks ago, until last week i had no pain and the recovery seemed to progress as expected, but a few days ago i started having groin pain on the left side, particularly sharp when i first stand up after sitting down, it seems to go away after a few steps.  Also, the area around the incision and all the way down to the knee area still feels numb and reddish.  I am told this is normal and will eventually go away, at least most of it.  But the pain in the groin is new to me, did not expect that at all..

Hi Kalean, I am experiencing exactly the same symptoms as you, I am 5 weeks post op and getting worried. I have friends who have had hip replacements but no one has had these problems. Before the op. I had pain in the groin and down to the knee.

Hi, I'd request a referral from your GP to your consultant.  Around 12 months post op I started experiencing pain in the femur  and when I got up and started walking around.  After a few steps the pain would subside but the time between standing and being able to walk comfortably started increasing so was referred back to the consultant.  Unfortunately my implant had started coming loose and 5 weeks ago today I had my second revision.  Good luck

This is very scary.  I hope i do not have the same.  I am opting for groin pain and not loosening of the prothesis.
