Pain After Methotrexate Injection

Posted , 4 users are following.

I just started on methotrexate injections after switching from the oral form of the drug. I take 15 mg once a week SQ. I inject in my abdomen as instructed by the nurse and use as clean technique as possible (I'm in the health care field, so I'm used to using sterile and clean techniques). Sometimes after the injection there is some stinging and discomfort, but it usually goes away within 20 minutes. However I have been having quite a bit of pain the next day after the injection, on the same side as the injection. It is an aching, constant pain, but significant. By the second day after the injection it's usually gone. I do alternate sides when I do the injections. A heating pad seems to help relieve the discomfort. I've spoken with my doctor's office and all they've said is that some people react differently to the injections, not very helpful.

Has anyone experienced this before and have any advice or insight? I would appreciate it greatly!

Thanks!

    Hi!

Just a couple of months ago I switched from oral meds to injection, 25mg once a week. I hope I can assure you in saying I also get some pain and aching the day after, and then it goes! It genuinely is because some people are more sensitive to it. It's a bit annoying but it's nothing to worry about.

Have you tried injecting into your thigh? I find the discomfort is lessened if injected there.

    Hope this helps :-)

      Hi,

Thank you for responding. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one that has experienced this, that does make me feel a lot better! The last two injections I did in my thighs and it was a lot better and no pain the day after. Yeah!

Thank you so much for your help!!

Thank you for responding. Since I posted I have tried injecting in my thighs and I haven't had any pain the day after the injections, so I'm going to try just alternating sites and see how it goes. Maybe I'm more sensitive in the stomach area, who knows, but thanks for the help, I appreciate it!
