Pain after sitting for period of time?

I have had ongoing pain since my total hip replacement on the right in mid June 2019 but noticed that after I sit for a period of time, upon standing up the pain is excruciating.. so much that I need to stand for a bit before started off. Sometimes, after walking a bit, the pain seems better, but it is always there! My pain is worse than before I got the replacement. I can't barely stand on my one leg, can't even think about running, my gait is funky, my left leg and foot are now aching... The surgeon's assistant said it take a year before everything heals, but I don't think this pain is normal. ???

I am now 1 year since left hip and 5 months since right hip and they get stiff and hurts from time to time. It all depends how much activity I have done or not done. I just stop taking hydrocodone two days ago since October last year. I will go back in 6 months to my surgeon but I know the severe damage from osteoarthritis over the years wrecked havoc on my joints. It was explained it would take some time for body to heal. I am thankful the pain is no where near as bad before any surgery. I pray all gets better for you but if you know and feel something is wrong, please get it checked out.

The same thing is happening to me. i am 8 weeks post op and when I stand after sitting I have to wait before I start walking because the pain is too much and its like my body needs to loosen up. My legs also feel like I have weights on them. I hope this passes as its very uncomfortable. Hopefully we will both feel better soon X

Hi Carol, that will get better, very normal. Its almost like you have to get your balance upon standing at 1st, before you walk off. I am at 9 months and I finally dont have to do this! Just give it time! Its pretty frustrating at 1st!

I had a THR in May of 2018. I had the same issues almost. I have always used a Stnading station for my desk, as especially since surgery, it is much more comfortable. If I sit for very long, I end up with the entire leg hurting on the operated side. I did have an MRI which showed nothing, but surgeon sent me to a spine surgeon who thought it was a nerve pressing against the SI joint, which happened during surgery. Apparantley nerve issues and damage is pretty common in the surgery. I finally had more Physical therapy and strong anti imflammatories last fall, which helped for awhile, but it cam eback, so yesterday got an injection in the SI joint. Will know in 10 days if it works for me or not. I was a triathlete, and there is no way I could run, job or anything close at this point. My pain starts in the back almost pelvis area on the operated side, and goes down the entire outside of the leg into the top of the foot. SOme days are much worse than others. I can stand on it, so its not as bad as yours possibly. I also had a 1/4" leg length difference which my surgeon said should even out at the 1 year mark, but Im highly doubting it. Im thinking this is part of the issue. I do feel it when I walk, not limping so much, but definitely I am "off" from a normal gait.

Hello, I am 59 yo female from Western Massachusetts. I had AVR in rt hip with THR in October 2016. I have had that pain you are all experiencing since. I did the PT following surgery, followed all the rules etc. Nothing has helped. I have had x-rays, MRI's, bone scans, you name it I have had it. PT says that all they can do is massage the muscle but nothing will improve it. One DR wants to operate again to see what is going on!! Another DR feels it might be pinched nerves and put me on CYMBALTA for the Osteoarthritis. I cannot sit at a desk job so I am on my feet 9 hours a day. I am on prednisone currently for Bronchitis which helps with the pain but that ends in 3 days and the pain will be back. Very frustrating since this was not mentioned prior to surgery. I am open to any and all suggestions. Thank you all!

I had exactly the same symptoms. I would stand up from sitting and have to stand still for a few seconds before being able to move on. The PA thought that it could be bursitis and gave me a cortisone shot. Within two days I was completely pain free! Being totally pain free lasted for a couple of weeks, but some of the benefits remained. I can now stand and start moving right away. Other stiffness, etc. returned, but the shot did help significantly.

Sadly that is pretty typical - at least for me.

I have been through this recovery 3 times in 3 years (same hip), and the first step after sitting down is usually very hard. Even though I am back at the gym and playing 'gentle' golf, I still get what I call my 'standing pains'.

Massage on the muscles, and exercise is the usual remedy. I have resorted to a sports physio giving me a really good deep massage, but you need a good one that knows about THR and recovery.

I'm finding that leg stretches are really helpful. I no longer have the standing pains.
