I am 8 weeks tomorrow post right through. My physio this week said I am doing well and muscles geting stronger. They said I could sleep on operated side. Last night I laid on operated hip for about 5 minutes but went onto my back as was painful.

Today my hip very sore and uncomfortable. Do you think this is normal.

? I haven't broken restrictions at all.

I don't think it's that common, but I'm 16 months and can't sleep on operated side. Hurts, I have bursitis.

It's not at all uncommon.   Same thing happend to me.  It was completely impossible for me at that stage.  So for now just go to your good side and make sure you always use a pillow between your legs.  As you advance in your recovery, keep attempting trying the operated side but when you turn over, make sure that pillow is still between your legs.  One day, you will most likely be able to do it and you will be suprised how easy it is, unless some other condition is going on like a bursitits.  But most likely, you are just not ready yet.  Before you know it, you will be able to.  I think it was somewhere between the third and forth month that I did it with ease.  And it suprised me when I was finally able to do so and now it's very comfortable.  But I still use the pillow just in case I get the desire in my sleep to cross my leg over and find the pillow makes it more comfortable.  Good luck.  It will come with time.

Hi Tracy You say you are having physio, Are they also working  on your scarf sites, I am 10 weeks THR and my physio has been massaging my scar and surrounding areas,  as she would say to make sure there are no bubbles. I am in Spain so communication can sometimes be awkward, but she states she is getting rid of  The fibres that have connected to the scar I think muscles.  It is not for the faint hearted but already I am finding the area much better and although I still cannot sleep for long on the operated side, I must say it is much easier Regards. dot

Yep - after my first operation, i could easily sleep on the operated side, after my second operation on the same hip, I could only sleep on it for a few seconds, but was OK on the non-operated side.

Nine months on, I can sleep on either side, but still the non-operated side is the easier side.

    Hi Tracey!

I had my surgery 15 months ago and I still can't lay on my operated side. I can for about 10 minutes then it just really gets sore and I feel uncomfortable for a few hours. I ususally sleep on my right side but because I am bone on bone on that side ,it's not for very long then I have to lie on my back which kills me because I have OA in my spine as well. Lol! can't win for losing!

I'm sure we'll get there sooner or later!

    Good luck to you!

Luckily my back is okay. I did have back ache before surgery but wondering if was due to gait when I walked with bad hip.

Actually slept all night last night on my back. Such surprise and relief to wake up and see was 6am rather than midnight smile smile x

Hi tracey. Im 9 months post opp. And somtimes my operation side feels like im laying on a bag of potatoes..and sometimes its nit bad. If I sit on the floor..not often...it feel lumpy and uncomfortable. Im told by my surgeon and physio to give it 18 months or more. So dont rush the feelings...

everyones differant, and everything is normal for you and your body. X

I can remember for the first few months I thought I was always sitting on my cell phone when here it was the muscle and residual swelling. If I sat down on a hard surface it felt as though I was sitting on a rock. I can't sit on the floor because I'd be afraid I wouldn't be able to get up.

    hello tracey,

so many valuable responses already and I really don't have anything new to add -

if it hurts or is not comfortable, don't do it - the wound underneath the scar is healing and sensitive, so why aggrevate the area?

I had 2 THR surgeries - seems as if scar of 1st R THR is a litgtle higher up the butt, so to speak, so not many problems laying on it -- however, scar on 2nd L Hip seems more away from butt ans laying on it has been uncomfortabkle for while ---

    just try it -

are you allowed to sleep on unoperatyed side though? I know that there are so many different apporaiches, restrictions to the sleeping positions post-op THR ...

how are you getting on otherwise?

    big warm hug

      Hi Renee

It makes sense to be uncomfortable I guess. Just worry too much I think but live in dread of dislocating hip. Not sure if allowed to lie on good side but seeing consultant on Monday so will ask.

I am doing pretty well I think. Walking decent distance each day. I still take stick out but don't really need it but more confidence and to ensure people know that I Need bit space. Starting to walk upstairs properly and not one leg at time. Just hate restrictions so much.my 2 year old grandaughter staying tomorrow night which will be lovely but frustrating not to be able to play on floor together. Never mind plenty of hugs on sofa reading books together.

How are you getting on xxx

You a spring chicken then - I am 53 !! I found a pillow under knees definitely helps. Just back from walk with my dog and dog walker. I have so missed walking my Westie but not confident in woods alone yet. Downloaded a walking app on my phone and walked nearly four miles today. Worn out but very pleased with progress.

      Have a good weekend x

      hi tracey,

I know ... the getting down on the floor (it is more the getting up that is so challenging) is something that might take some time -

and picking her up is also a no-no right now -

2 years old girls are smart cookies and maybe you and her can find a creative way to cuddle, snuggle or play -

have her take you for walks - she might be delighted to help nan !!!

don't feel guilty or get angry and frustrated with yourself -- this is what it is right now - not fun but you had the surgery and are doing really great - be gentle and kind to Tracey and know that all is well ---

      big warm hug

      renee
