Pain after weight bearing ....

Posted , 5 users are following.

I’m 7 weeks out from ankle surgery, I badly broke and dislocated it. I am now in a can boot since Thursday and weight bearing. My heel hurts quite a bit when I walk, is this normal ?

Also I still can’t flex or point downward with my foot as it hurts, should I push myself through the pain or slowly let it heal and not push it ?

Thank you in advanced x

Have you a physical therapist to help you do appropriate exercises. Also there are many therapists on you tube that will give you appropriate info in you case.

I never would do any exercises if the pain the pain is too much. I always needed pain meds to help me thru therapy and regain motion in my ankle. After time and healing slowly got thru it all. Walking better I hope soon!

many healing blessings sent your way!

If you are weight bearing, you should be doing ROM exercises. I would try to arrange an appointment with a PT as soon as you can so that you can get an appropriate exercise program and guidance that is specific to your injury. You may need some other physio treatment to help you regain that ROM which will make walking much easier.

Hi, before my PT was scheduled, which was a while  after being in a cast 2x4 weeks then a boot for some time, what I did was  Lie down on my bed with my foot against the wall, yes I had lots of swelling and knee down my leg to foot was purple, but I began my PT on my bed toe tapping against the wall, it gained my confidence back, then I went to using a snooker ball under foot rolling it on the floor, this is painful as it wakes up the nerves. I have a non union fracture to my ankle and broke my leg, 2 plates 17 pins, I was hit hard which is why after 10 months my ankle remains broken, I begin Oxygen  therapy in the new year, however this doesn’t stop me going to ankle classes and light mobility classses twice per week I do about 20 miles per week on the  exercise bike, I do have a  severe limp but it is improving as the weeeks go by. I say all this to say start small with your PT, don’t stop and you’ll need to push through the pain but as agreed do run it all by your doc and PT consultant, they told me to push push push. So I did and I’m still doing. Keep on keeping on you will get there, have  patience. Bless ya!

In January 2015, I also broke in 3 places + dislocation. I had ORIF first, then a fusion.

I was told at the very beginning- the recovery time is extensive.

    Time-wise.

I now understand what the Dr meant !

If you're told the same, believe it.

It will hurt, be sore, swell.

Where you will hurt, be sore and swell on your ankle - will change every few days.

This can go on for a very long time... 7 weeks is a cup of water compared to an ocean!

This is just a general answer, I know. But since I am not a Dr, this is the big picture. I wish you well.
