Pain and burning with knee weakness in leg after hip joint injection of steroid lasting 2 months

2 months ago I had an injection of a steroid in my left hip joint for hip pain.  During the injection I felt the sting, and pressure as described by the anesthesiologist but then immediately felt the most excruciating pain down my leg that I have ever had.  It felt like they had blown my leg off.  The pain went away very shortly.  Several hours all of the pain was relieved.  Then 2 hours later severe pain returned to my left leg.  I was not able to stand, sit or even lay down without pain. I was prescribed pain med and advil which takes the edge off the pain but I still get sharp pain down my leg and have knee weakness.  My MD thinks it is sciatica due to degenerative changes in my back. The pain is in my groin and down the center of my leg.  I think it is too much of a coincidence that sciatica should start the same day as the injection into my hip.  My hip surgery was cancelled due to my "sciatica".
