Pain and Popping In My Collarbone?

Posted , 3 users are following.

Last summer, I was outside running around with a few friends, and twisted my ankle in a hole and fell. My ankle was fine, but I landed with my chest to the ground and my shoulder down but my elbow up. For a while it hurt, and then a popping sensation occured on the right of my collarbone, up towards where your neck meets your body. In the last few months, it has started acting up again. It pops, and there is a sharp pain that shoots down my arm. It pops when I bring my arm up it pops, and if I move my arm backwards, it hurts more. I am at a loss, so if anyone could provide some insight to what this might be or related to, I would be greatly appreciative.

Also, I play baseball and I am physically active. I do not weight lift often.

could be many things. When a fall occurs...the whoe body reacts to hitting the ground. Sounds like it's coming from area of sternoclavicular joint. Do you notice any asymmetries from right to left side? It would not hurt to get a referral to an orthopedist for examination or to see a Physical Therapist. Don't know where you are located. Some states in US, PT's have direct access wheras others require referral from a MD. Don't even need to go to ortho MD...just referral from regular MD would be fine. I don't know the laws in the UK.  Don't ignore it. It could progress to something more over the years and you will have forgotten the connection from the fall.

There's no physical differnce, but if you can feel it pop if you place your finger near or on the joint. It hurts more if I bring my arm back, as if to throw a ball or stretch the shoulder. I've spoke to my PT in the last week or so, and she said that the muscles in my shoulder are really tight, and that could be part of the problem. I'm going to goto the ER later to get an x-ray, so I'll post the results on here.

Oh boy.  Schedule a quick visit with your doctor to make sure you know what you are experiencing.  The doctor may give you a simple protocol with over the counter meds, or the doctor may give you a referral to physical therapy for an evaluation.  Good luck and keep us posted!

Well, it is my sternocavicular joint that is injured. The X-rays showed no fracture or break, but it is inflamed and swolen. I was referred to a specialist, and they're going to give me a steriod injection into the joint. The doctor has me taking certain supplements for joint and bone health. Is the inflammation the cause for the popping?

my guess is that tighness is causing the popping. I have had a subluxed SC joint for decades after a car accident, which also let to subluxed AC (acromioclavicular joint). Since these are ligamentous injuries and there is really not much in the way of muscles crosseing either of the joints, it's good to maintain good flexibility of your shoulder muscles sternocleidomastoid muscles and don't let your pectorals get too tight as the years go by as all the tightness will place strain on the SC and AC joint. The inflammation should subside with the cortisone an/or antiinflammatory, cold...and time. Glad you have no fractures. Have a happy, active life!
