Pain at the top of big toe, just where the bone is and you would think it a bunion pain

I thought I would have a go and see if anyone has had my problem. During the summer my feet swell,  Where you would think you have a bunion, my big toe was very very painful in fact it stlll is.  I am sure its not a bunion as my feet are not deformed at all, exceptr in the area of the bone - if I rub at the bottom of the toe, not underneath but the side of the bone, its really painful.  if I wear sandles and sometimes  flat shoes the I get the same pain.

My back has 3 discs out of place and wonder whether this could be the sciatic nerve.  My friend who is a physio has also had a go of soothing my big toe but had no luck.  She did say that I should try and move my big toe inwards towards the other foot as she thought it might be the beginning of a bunion.

Any ideas?.

I have the same problem my doctor said it's arthritis. I use to get cortisone injections directly into the joint of my big toes(left was worse than right). Since developing neuropathy in my feet everything thing hurts so I can't really tell if the pain is in my toes until it cramps so bad I want to cut it off. The injections hurt like crazy because of them pulling the joints apart to put needle in between the bones. I will say that it helped for six to seven months. Hope this can help. Although you may not have same need as I. Jmac

Cortisone does only help for a short while and you have to top it up all the time, nuisance as you have to go to the drs and then wait for someone qualified to do the injection.   Could be arthritis for me too...

Hello Enna,  It does sound like it could be the start of a bunion as i have had bunions and they became painful before they became deformed. It is also possible it could be arthritis as i now have arthritis in one of my big toes and i thought the bunion had come back, the surgeon assured me it was arthritis, thou i don't have pain at the moment. A bunion sounds more likely, my bunions caused pain before i had them done. Are you flat footed by any chance as that can make you more prone to getting them. The arthritis doesn't seem to be causing me pain at them the moment. It is very hard to say without examination so you may be best to get it checked. I thought my daughter had a bunion coming but she said the GP said it was arthritis. The two can look very similar.

No not flat footed, I would have thought that arthritis was the answer, the bone doesn't stick out at all but I've got 3 prs of shoes where underneath the leather is stitched and rubbing against my gone it gets really painful. So it could be the start of a bunion, but thought that arthritis on this bone was arthritis.

I might mention it when I see the dr.  What a pain sorry the pun. I have bought some new shoes today where there is no join in the leather so maybe I will get on with them better.  I live in spain where there is supposed to be good shoes, no there isn't.... ha ha
