Pain behind knee 4 months after THR
Posted , 5 users are following.
I had a LTHR in December, and suddenly now I am having loads of pain behind the left knee, minimal swelling. It is keeping me from proper walks and I am limping. Should I bring it up to my surgeon? I was so hoping it would go away. I was very functional, moving about with no pain, until a few days ago.

I have had had very physio. After a brilliant 6 weeks following surgery, I tore muscles in my hip. So I was back to walking with support, and not allowed any excercise. But about 8 weeks later, I was really feeling great.
I walk a lot, I have a dog. And I am a yoga teacher, so I was teaching the whole time, not demonstrating until much later.
its very frustrating, but I think I will contact my Physio.
Thank you.

This is really very odd. Can you tell us more please.
How has your hip been following surgery, how have you been walking, and how far.
Thanks Richard

Hi Richard,
My recovery has been complicated. I had a fantastic immediate recover, until I tore the muscles around the newly done hip. I was in agony. Not allowed to do Physio, or walk without support, and I couldn't actually move well at all. No excercise allowed. But I did heal, and about 8 weeks later I could go for long walks and do some yoga. Feeling really well and not in pain. Now, I am feeling pain in front and mostly in back of left knee. I have pain around the scar and the muscles don't feel knitted together as well as they did. Generally I fell I have gone back in time with my recovery. Part of me thinks it may be normal. But I think I will just let the surgeon know.
I am not sure if rest or Physio would be helpful.
Thank you.

Thanks for explaining. Just one more thing how you any idea how you managed to tear the muscles
I would go back to your surgeon if only to eliminate things involving the hip surgery. In the meantime I would do anything that relaxes the muscles in your leg, knee and thigh. Do you have any back pain?
Cheers Richard

Hi Richard,
I tore the muscles while bouncing out of my chair, turning to the right, at the same time and taking my sock of of my surgical side. My sock caught on my toe, I nearly fell over. I was moving to the right and I pulled my new hip side to the left. So I did all of this really quickly and my muscles tore. It felt like a zipper of pain lifting through the mucles. I couldn't move. Before this happend I was pain free. I had 3 more episodes with slight tears, each very painful and made movement impossible. I had an untlasound and an X-ray. I was back to using support to walk. This was depressing as I had put the sticks away.
I know it takes a long time to heal properly. I find it hard to know what is normal pain and what should be reported.
Thank you for your help.

Dear Barbara
Thanks for telling us how it happened. Somehow I really don't think your surgeon is going to be of much help. Time and lots of patience and gentle massaging I suspect and trying to keep the muscles in a relaxed state.
Hoping things start to improve soon
Cheers Richard

I would see my surgeon to have it checked, especially since there is some swelling -
do you remember having done something unusual - are you walking without assisting device?
do you see a physical therapist ?
let us know how you are getting on, okay? always good to share here -
take care - perhaps take it a bit easy today?
big warm hug

Thank you very much Renee. I will contact my surgeon tomorrow. I haven't seen a Physio in a while, but I have been walking and doing yoga every day. Maybe I have overdone it. But this week I have tried to do much less. And the pain is still there.
I will I'll report back. And I will search more about knee pain after surgery on this site.

Hi Barbara,
Yes, bring this up with your surgeon. They can run tests to find out what is causing the pain. You may have just irritated the muscles when trying to walk again after your hip surgery. Have you tried elevating your leg and using ice packs to reduce the swelling? It's probably something minor, but always best to get things checked out.
Best wishes!

I think I will just let him know. I elevated the leg all weekend. But will try icing it tomorrow. It is feeling better, but as you say, better to just get checked for good measure.
Thank you!
