Pain bending over after hip replacement

Posted , 9 users are following.

I am 7 months post THR and I am totally thrilled with the replacement...however, when I forget to put my leg behind me (as in the golfer's stance) and I bend over completely at the waist when I straighten up I have severe pain in that hip.  Once the leg is straightened the pain is gone with no residual soreness.  Is this normal or is something wrong?

I bend down a lot karen, I am totally useless in remembering to put my leg out, I even bent over the day after op in hospital to pick up a tissue (got told off). I am 25 weeks post op today but as yet never had a pain. As you are okay when you stand up straight and I assume walking, I suspect it will more than likely be okay.

    Hi Karen,

I'm 9 months post (oh my gosh the year has flown by since the op) and STILL get 'caught' bending all the way over, and have to navigate, carefully, getting upright. It's been suggested to me that it might be an issue with the 'soas tendon. But I am so OVER issues with my hip that I'm really trying to get over the problem mechanically. I'm on old dog trying to learn new tricks!  Think about the tendon ....

I'm also 9 months and had a trouble-free recovery. but the past couple of weeks I've been in pain when I straighten after bending. I hurt my back and it seems to have started then. Once I'm standing, its fine but can hurt a lot getting there.

Probably just the unfamiliar use of muscles in bending as you have not been bending like that since the operation, eventually it will come and you'll be able to touch your toes!

Not seen that graph before Graham. I am 9 weeks post op on Monday and I do now sit on the bed and put my pop socks on and can manage to tie the laces on my trainers. I think it's just a case of taking great care and moving slowly. If it feels dodgy - stop! My only irritating issue is a grisly noise when I climb the stairs. It feels like muscles etc sorting themselves out so I'm not worried. Think I'm getting a bit impatient now having done so well but I don't intend to do anything silly. The graph is a reminder of just how much it's still early days for me. Thanks for posting it, it's a very good point of reference.

Just looked at the site, Graham. I had my op at Pinehill too. (I live in Stotfold.) Your useful resources info is great. I found the images of all the thigh muscles and description particularly good. It gives a lot of confidence when you see just how many muscles we have protecting the joint. I didn't realise you had any problem initially. I hope it's all sorted now.

Sent you a private message about Pinehill ..... I have a check-up at RNOH in London tomorrow, which should go well as I am doing fantastically now.

      Graham
