Pain/discomfort under right rib cage.

I have been experiencing this for the last few months, I have been searching the web looking for answers.  I am a 45 year old female, in good health, I take no medications, thin, active, I eat healthy, so I am at a loss. I have this feeling like there is something under my right rib cage as if something is stuck underneath or enlarged. At first I thought I had strained a muscle b/c I had been working out in the yard the day before it started. It doesn't hurt, it just feels like there is something there that shouldn't be but when I touch the area there is no swelling or bulge. After about 3-4 weeks when it wasn't going away I went to see my doctor. They did blood work, urine labs and sent me for an ultrasound of gallbladder, all came back normal. I have no other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. just this feeling like something is there. It seemed to go away on it's own and then came back and has come and gone since sometimes lasting a few days, sometimes a few weeks. When it is back wearing a bra is uncomfortable. Sometimes there is a warmth or burning sensation in the area. The only other symptoms I have had that I think are related are these: A few months before this started I experienced a fluttering sensation, almost like when I was pregnant and the baby moved, in the same location, a couple of times. Since this has started, on 3 or 4 different occasions, I have experienced a charlie horse like spasm in the same area, below the right rib, when bending over from a sitting position. Does anyone have any answers as to what this might be?  Does it sound like IBS? Peptic Ulcer? Hiatal Hernia?

      Hi Debi,

It seems we’re all the same ! I’m considering going to see a chiropractor & have an MRI scan on Saturday , not expecting much from it tbh as others have commented theirs showed nothing. It is a relief to share experiences on here too. 😊

I was recently tested for MALS and the preliminary test gave me a lot of relief.  When the doctor met with me, he stated that it was very common to have the feeling that something was under your rib cage, pressure, etc...with MALS. I am going back in two weeks for a follow up appointment regarding treatment - surgery or injections.  I will keep you up to date.  In the meantime, you may want to see a MALS specialist, as it usually goes undiagnosed for years and is not life threatening.

Hi kit4410. I know this is a very old post but I am eager to discover if you eventually received a diagnosis. I am experiencing exactly what you describe. Thanks. I hope to hear from you! Claire

I too have had the same symptoms that keep me from everyday life.  I can't even bend down to tie my sneakers and not have the "Bulge" pop out from under my rib cage, which is a golf ball size.  The bulge sends a big discomfort like a Charley Horse as others have described.  If I twist a certain way, it feels like its starting to come out my back so I hurry and adjust myself to not twist.  At times, it has taken me over an hour or more to massage and relax and breathe to try to get it to go back in when it pops out of my ribs.  Coughing, sneezing and bending over are the major culprits of making it pop out.  I have researched and gone to several doctors to no avail.  I even had a surgeon operate on my twice thinking it was an abdominal hernia, but they only found a very, very small one once and the other time he said there was nothing there.  At times I think these doctors think I'm crazy or making it up.  My husband can attest that I am not making it up.  It's debilitaing when it happens.

My background of stomach related issues is about 20 years ago I had the Nissen Fundlopcation Procedure done to help with severe reflux.  Then in 2011 I had major stomach surgery because my stomach had hernia upside down in my chest cavity and was attached to my heart and lung.  After 11 hours of surgery and a thorasic surgeon cutting my from my back to front of chest, they were able to cut th stomach away from the heart and lung and pull it down to where it should be.  They sutured it to my abodominal wall.  So my point in tell you all this is, I have also been told it could be adhesions or scar tissue that is getting hung up on organs and pulling them.  Although I dont see how adhesions can make a golf ball sized bulge appear from under my ribs.  Oh and I have also been on stomach meds for over 25 years.  First Prilosec until I developed an allergy about 15 years ago then switched to Protonix.

I have also researched The sphincter of Oddi which is muscular and helps the bile valves excrete bile and disperse to the area where it should.  In rare cases this Spincther Oddi can go into spasms.   This is something I am going to discuss with the next doctor I see.  It totally makes sense since they are on the right and left side which is where I get these golf ball sized bulges that cause a Charley Horse type pain.

Has anyone else looked in to the Spincter Oddi muscle spasms issue or asked a doctor about it ?

I'm at my wits ends here.  I can't continue to live like this.

I have had similar symptoms for three years. Doctors were convinced it was my gallbladder even though hide scan was negative. Also was treated for IBS and acid reflux. With not relief. Finally got a correct diagnosis. Distasis Recti, which is a separated abdominal muscle

At 52 years old. Doctor says there is no fixing it. Just have to manage the pain and try to strengthen my core without causing more damage. The digestive issues are due to the weak abdominal muscles. After researching It, the abdominal muscle control your digestive tract. Thus the slow digestion, causes buildup of bile leading to bouts of diarrhea, bloating and reflux.

That is great that you got some clarity! That would make sense as mine started shortly after giving birth and tends to feel worse after lots of physical activity. I will look into it. Good luck!
