Pain/discomfort under right rib cage.

I have been experiencing this for the last few months, I have been searching the web looking for answers.  I am a 45 year old female, in good health, I take no medications, thin, active, I eat healthy, so I am at a loss. I have this feeling like there is something under my right rib cage as if something is stuck underneath or enlarged. At first I thought I had strained a muscle b/c I had been working out in the yard the day before it started. It doesn't hurt, it just feels like there is something there that shouldn't be but when I touch the area there is no swelling or bulge. After about 3-4 weeks when it wasn't going away I went to see my doctor. They did blood work, urine labs and sent me for an ultrasound of gallbladder, all came back normal. I have no other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. just this feeling like something is there. It seemed to go away on it's own and then came back and has come and gone since sometimes lasting a few days, sometimes a few weeks. When it is back wearing a bra is uncomfortable. Sometimes there is a warmth or burning sensation in the area. The only other symptoms I have had that I think are related are these: A few months before this started I experienced a fluttering sensation, almost like when I was pregnant and the baby moved, in the same location, a couple of times. Since this has started, on 3 or 4 different occasions, I have experienced a charlie horse like spasm in the same area, below the right rib, when bending over from a sitting position. Does anyone have any answers as to what this might be?  Does it sound like IBS? Peptic Ulcer? Hiatal Hernia?

This sure sounds a lot like what I'm going through.  Mine feels like nerve pain like needles most of the time.  Sometimes feels a bit swollen but not too often.  I still have a feeling it's my thoracic rib and back that's doing this but I just don't know.  I may have another ultrasound - been having this off and on for a year and a half.  Does anyone else get needle like pain????  Doesn't seem like gallbladder - I know I don't have stones per last ultrasound.

I don't get any needle like pain, just the same symptoms that kit4410 described. Sounds like several people are experiencing something like this. Wish any of us had a clear diagnosis!

I get the needle pain. Today it's bad. When I rubbed the area, I felt a hard lump. First time I have felt a lump. Mine feels like its numb with pins and needles. About 2" below center of bottom right ribcage. Had endoscopy, ultrasound, swallowing test, colonoscopy, another test where they inject me with a dye that makes you want to pee. Then they do a CT scan to see if you have any blockages. All my tests came back normal. I am stumped. I am 55, don't drink at all, but do drink a lot of Diet Mountain Dew. Like 5 a day. I am a smoker. Taking Zyban and my quit day is in 8 days. I gained 100 pounds recently. The first 40 I don't know how. My Dr said to go to the gym. There was something wrong and he blew me off. Than I got depressed about the weight gain bc I was anal about what I ate and I worked out twice a day. Was doing 300 crunches a day. And the more I gained, the more depressed I got. So I quit working out, than quit being so anal about what I ate. Now I'm 240 pounds. Was 136 about 3 years ago. But I am stumped about this pain. It is a very wierd sensation. Almost like when the dentist numbs your mouth, and the numbness starts going away. Pins and needles.

That stinks Mary, I'm sorry! First of all, it sounds like you may need a new doctor.

I first noticed the same sensation (numbness/tingling) while I was pregnant. My OBGYN said it's very common because your abdomen grows and it puts pressure on a muscle that pinches a nerve and causes the numb sensation. I wonder if weight gain is presenting a similar challenge.

I would recommend an MRI. If it helps, I have gone through all the tests and even found benign spots on my liver. When I went to see a liver specialist he said 30 years ago when people had issues like this, they would do exploratory surgery and most usually would find nothing. Unfortunately he said it may just be something we live with, as long as we can rule out the dangerous stuff.

Take care of yourself! Try to join weight watchers and exercise when you feel better. It's a lot easier to lose weight through diet than exercise, and seeing some results may inspire you to work out! And please, try to quit smoking smile

      Good luck!

Yesterday I read through most of this thread then it occurred to me, not one of the posts did I see that anyone looked for help from their chiropractor.  I pulled out my own rib cage yesterday and woke up with no symptoms.  I did go to my chiropractor today. We'll see if that helps. Good Luck!

Yes!  My thoughts too. I've been adjusted with ribs out of place t11-t12. Plus muscle relaxers when I feel the spasm pain in my rib like something is jammed up in them. I've also had the fluttering feeling, along with pain and severe bloating. My chiro always seems to make it feel much better, until I lift something or pull it back out of place again.

      Hi all,

I suffer the same problems as most people on this thread. Right rib/back pain, baby moving sensation, bra uncomfortable and stomach pain, bloating and burping. At times it feels like someone is pushing and pushing their fist into my side.

I have had an upper GI Scan and endoscopy. The upper Gi Scan was clear but the endoscopy showed erosive gastritis for which I am having treatment and my current stomach problems are improving but the rib pain remains.

Now the interesting bit - I’ve  been attending a pain clinic because of pain from recent lumbar and cervical surgeries and I’m having treatment from  a physiotherapist. I mentioned my rib/back pain and he has been manipulating my thoracic spine.

When he pushes against certain vertebrae I feel the familiar pain around my ribs/back and for me that confirms the problem is with the thoracic spine. I have had six treatments and have exercises to do at home and I am slowly improving.

I do think my rib pain is from bad posture. I like many people have worked at a computer for years and use one at home along with constantly checking my mobile.

It’s not going to be a quick fix but already the pain is not so severe an I am having periods when I’m pain free in that area.

Good luck to you all, I hope this will help some of you and you find some relief.

I actually did see my chiropractor but it did not help at all. It just made me scream more and cry. Then I wanted to throw up. The physical therapy my doctor made me do had the same result.

I have same symptoms as everyone here, pinch under right rib, rib cage pain with feeling a golf ball or something in there, gassy, muscle cramp/charlie horse between two ribs on right I need to stretch out. The rib cage pain is on the edge of the lower rib and also felt it was poor posture. I have herniated disc and bone spur T5, T6 thoracic spine that presses on spinal cord. I haven't done any tests for the pinch/pain under rib cage but going to see doctor this week because pain in more constant now and I worry a lot. I also have IBS and PTSD
