Pain free after catheter removal !? Huh ??!!

Hey everybody first time poster here!
So in regards to chronic pelvic pain or prostatitis.....i've been suffering with this for probably a good nine months. I've gone through the whole gamut of antibiotics and alpha blockers and all that stuff. And of course all the tests were negative.
Recently I went to a world renowned urologist in New York City, dr Kaplan out of Mount Sinai Hospital.
He's convinced and so am I at this point that I never truly had prostatitis at all. Upon further examination of my muscles in my rectum he said that they felt tight as a bowstring. I'm going to be starting pelvic floor therapy next week.
But something occurred to me today that is completely bizarre.
In the last nine months I have had cytoscopys, uretherial swabs, urodynamics etc.
The strangest part is this, anyone else experienced this please chime in and let me know.
When ever there is some sort of trauma to my urethra being at a scope or a swab, The urge to urinate is gone for at least two weeks. Those two weeks or so I feel pretty much normal.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Hello and welcome,
What do you mean by "pain free after catheter removal"? You don't mention a catheter in your post at all. Are you saying that the catheter is one of the traumas that precipitates normal voiding? If so, what was the catheter put in for and for how long? What are your actual symptons? Do you have burning, urgency, retention, pain, etc?

Hey jim,
My symptoms are basically the constant feeling of having to Pee or almost like I'm not emptying out.
I was diagnosed with non-bacterial prostatitis.
I had a catheter in for urodynamic. Worst test ever.
But I've noticed through the last nine months that whenever there is some sort of trauma as in something is physically inside of my urethra, such as a catheter or swab, once its removed, i'm pain-free and normal for about two weeks.
It's the weirdest thing

So no significant retention/PVR (post void residual), just a feeling of urgency? Maybe your uro is on to something. The "trauma" of the catheter might be loosening up your tight pelvic/rectum muscles. Who knows, you do realize that they're guessing half the time, expert or not! If the pelvic floor exercises don't work, or as a possible alternative, ask him about trying self cathing (CIC) as an rectum/pelvic stimulant/relaxant. If it works like your urodynamics, you would only have to self cath maybe once a week for normal voiding, and after a while maybe you could stop.

I'll tell you what, I had the second urodynamic done at 10:30 AM this morning.
I have Peed one time since then.
I didn't mention this to Dr Kaplan and he said exactly what you said jim about maybe some sort of trauma is loosening up the pelvic muscles.
The funny thing is when I have the swap done six months ago, it only went in about an inch and then once again pain-free for two weeks.
I'll tell you this is one of the most bizarre medical conditions I have ever heard of.
Are you in the New York New Jersey area ? Dr Kaplan really knows his stuff

Hi,
It doesn't really matter how "bizarre" your condition is. It may be as simple as tight muscles like the doc said. My point was that you already found a cure by sticking a catheter into you urethra every once in a while with urodynamics. Now, you don't want to keep going to the doctor for urodynamics every couple of weeks, but you can possibly accomplish the same thing by self cathing every couple of weeks in the privacy and convenience of your own home. Self cathing is very easy to learn. If you decide to try this route, let us know and we can make offer some help here.
