Pain In Both Knees

Hi, all.  Recently,  every time I stand up from a squatting position I get a sudden sharp pain in both knees. The pain feels like it’s in the top of my knee caps and only lasts for a minute or so. But it hurts bad enough to where it’s very painful to walk. I’ve never had an issue like this before.   I’m a 39y/o female in relatively good shape (average BMI and active). Does anybody have any idea what this could be?

1st thought that comes to mind, arthritis. Don't believe that just because you are active that you can't have some degree of arthritis. Sometimes over activity can bring on the symptoms

Best thing is to get to a sports medicine ortho and get some Xrays. One problem with knee issues, most won't just suddenly dissappear without some attention by medical experts. Also don't get caught up in the fact you are young and in good shape make you immune to damage. Correcting the issue may be just a change in activity or adding some proper movement By a professional such as physical therapy.

I am curious i you had a total or partial knee replacement?  I had one TKR done and I got this all of the time.  I am at 6 weeks now.  I was told by the nurse it sounded like a shortened IT band.  So I looked up stretches that I could do for my knee, dependent on the week am in and I have been doing those.  I also use a hand held massage to massage the outer part of my leg, thigh and shin.  In just 3 days the sharp pain and decreased by about 75%.

Push in on the outside of your thigh and shin.  Run your fingers up and down on the outside and push, if you feel pain, like a bruise I would venture to say it is soft tissue, IT band, tendon etc.

The 1st thing you could try is to bend down, touch the floor by your toes, or as close as you can get and hold for 30-40 seconds, this will give a fast stretch that can relieve some tightening.

I have never had a knee replacement. This intense pain has just started out of no where. After reading your comment, i think there is a soft tissue or tendon issue. I do have an appointment scheduled next month to have them checked out. In the meantime, I will try your stretching and message techniques you recommended. Keep your fingers crossed for me that it won’t get as serious as what you had to go through. Best of luck with your knee recovery!

Thank you Karen.  Try this: get a hot bath going, put in epson salts, sit in it and try pulling your heel to your butt.  Sit there awhile with that.  I am in Co. and use the MJ herb for pain instead of synthetic drugs.  I am a light weight when it comes to any medicine so it only takes 1-2 puffs.  I do this before my tub soak and it really lessons up the soft tissues when stretching.  I would guess a glass of wine would do the same.  Good luck.  Did you push or PRESS your fingers into the outer side of your leg and feel around?  Did it feel like bruises deep down and hurt to the touch?
