Pain in left abdomen and back, loose stools?

Just before Christmas I developed a pain in my lower left back, side and waist. After 2 weeks I visited the doctor and at this point I had no other symptoms. She checked my urine to rule out a kidney infection, which came back clear, she tested for a hernia, which came back clear, she ruled out muscular pain, and referred me for an ultrasound on my ovaries in case I had a cyst. I had this yesterday and it was all normal.

However, since my initial visit I feel I've had A LOT of gas / trapped wind, followed by bouts of not what I would call diarrhoea - but definitely a looser than normal bowel movement and I feel like I'm going a lot more than I normally would. My appetite is still good, in fact I feel hungrier than normal.

The pain is not bad - maybe a 2/3 out of 10 and just a constant dull ache. A hot water bottle relieves it to an extent, as does paracetamol.

I haven't changed my diet, nothing seems to trigger it. Does this sound like IBS? And if not does anyone know what it could be? My irrational thinking leads me to bowel cancer but I am only 21, vegetarian and run 20 miles a week - so somewhat unlikely.

Many thanks in advance smile

Sounds like IBS. Your symptoms are like mine except I started with constant, generalised stomach pain along with nausea, constipation, back pain and loose stools. Now my pain comes and goes and my bowel habits are mostly normal.  Stress is my trigger; food causes no problems.

Has your doctor suggested Irritable Bowel?  See your doctor again for a definitive diagnosis.

Some tests for the bowel etc they push up air so they can see if the tubes are clear.

If you feel you are worried with regards the bowel and colon they can test that, the test is invasive as they pass a camera up inside you and if they find anything they generally remove the problem at the same time as they can attach bits of kit to the lens. They also give a sedation to help ou relax

Thanks for your replies. Glad to hear someone has similar symptoms. I went to the doctors this morning and they confirmed it may be IBS - they are going some bloods - Liver function, PRS, full blood count and re testing me for Coeliac (Celiac) as my younger sister has it and although I was tested it was last year - they said it can develop at any point. Will keep you all updated. No luck with pain but dosing up on painkillers smile

Are there any red flags I should be looking out for?

    Many thanks again.
