Pain in outer pelvis area and lifting leg

Posted , 10 users are following.

Hi everyone,

It's me again ?? I've got a couple of questions if that is ok.

Firstly, I've got a pulling, sore area between my thigh and my waist..the pelvic area? All on the outer aspect. Did anyone else have this? I had a posterior uncemented approach.

Secondly, I've been trying for a couple of days now to lift my operated leg slightly off the bed when I'm lying down but can't seem to do this. It's as though my leg is made of concrete!!! I'm 6 weeks post op tomorrow and due to see the physio on Tuesday. Just wondering if there is any advice from someone who has had a similar thing.

Thanks in advance for any replies I might get,

Healing wishes to you all,

Jacqui xx

I haven't been given any bed exercises Vanessa. Which are the best ones to do? And are there any videos so I would see how they are done?

      Many thanks

Yes, I have been doing the bed exercises described by Veronica faithfully.

Also standing tall and taking the operated leg out backwards. Physio at the hospital said it was important as some people do not do this and end up with very tight hip extensors.

Take it slowly if you havnt done a particular exercise before. Start with 5 then build up.

      Take care. X

Aha, the old concrete leg - Yep, been there!  Try a long belt, strap or cord under the foot to help lift it.

I had posterior uncemented too, and various pulling and soreness - I started massaging my scar area with Bio Oil which seemed to help me.

As others have said, exercises, especially bum cheek clenching is very good for helping move the leg and stop aches and pains eventually

      Thanks Graham,

Right ok, yes I think they sell Bio Oil at Tesco.

      Will try that 😊

      Many thanks

I also found the sitting on a dining chair and standing with feet together (as though you are holding an egg in between your knees) and start by pushing up from sides of seat building up to crossing arms and standing for about 2 mins at a time.  Try it!

    hi jacqie,

please don't do straight legraises yet

..It is too hard. .muscles and tendons etc were cut..major healing is taking place

    ..It's so fragile ...

this could be the cause of your pain ....

When is your follow up appointment with your surgeon?

standing -and bed exercises are good ...

    how are you doing otherwise?

    Big warm hug

      Hi Renee,

I'm in the Uk so I don't see my consultant until 12 weeks. Ok, I hear what you're saying, couldn't do them anyway so glad to stop ?? I only tried a couple of times to see if I could. I also struggle with the standing abductor exercise. I feel a really uncomfy prickling sensation and I still feel quite weaken this area.

I'm doing standing knee raises, standing abductors, I'm not sure what they are called but standing leg raises to the front and back, and knee bend backwards. Do this sound ok? I was just given a little piece of paper on discharge with these on, I was never actually shown how to do them by the physio. The days she came she was the only one on duty for 30 patients so I only had 5 mins of her time for the 2 days I was in hospital. I've made an appt on Tuesday with a physio because again it was left to me when I felt ready.

I've just started yesterday to walk with one stick which I am encouraged by. I'm still quite slow but I'm keen to try and not get back into old habits of limping, so I try and walk slowly heel to toe to try and get my brain to understand what I'm aiming for.

I'm ok in myself, pretty good in mood. The days of crying seem to be well and truly behind me. I had a look on YouTube at some of the videos on there but I just get depressed at a lot of the people on there seem to be pretty recovered at 4 weeks ??

I do a lot of driving and standing with work so I'm lucky I've got 3 months off, so instead of rushing I'm more concerned with getting back to work and staying there.

Oh but it's so lovely to wake up and not be in pain for the first time in years ??

I really appreciate your reply Renee,

Great idea to get a Physio advice. I think lots of people on here have done that. You will be fine. I am going to do the same. I am finally getting the message myself that it does take time. Frustrating I know.

My Surgeon was very clear with me. Not to rush things.  No twisting bending. Nothing but the prescribed exercises and walking!

      Hi Jacqui ,

see how we are all different ?  some have no problem doing this straight leg lift when laying on bed (floor) and some, like me, have -

same with physical therapist and their approaches -

the best is to listen to your body - Pain is not a gain post-op THR, I think -

the standing exercises you described are the same as I got and do - you can always increase the repetitions -

I was late doing floor exercises as i had problems getting on and off floor and since i live alone, there was also some fear involved -

Enjoy where you are right now - you are doing great , really great !

      angel blessings

Hi Jacqui...I had the same type of approach done and it was closer to 8weeks before I was able to lift the "cement leg" well off the bed while lying down.  Give it about 10-14 more days....you will see a big difference in the things you can do....

Hi Jacqui -- If you Google "exercises following hip replacement," many sites will come up with exercises.  They usually have them listed according to which week you are post-op.  You could start at the beginning really.  I just did that search and the pamphlet I was given is there.  You can also search on YouTube and they will demonstrate the exercises.

I am 5 weeks post-op and I don't have that difficulty of lifting my leg.....but that was one of the very first exercises.

I'm sure you Physio will give you good exercises next week.

    Good luck.

Hi Jacqui94204, I went thought that also, just keep on trying lying on your size and lift yep it's going to feel so heavy but after awhile you're be able to lift it, it just takes time. Good luck one more thing if you lay on your stomach and try to left that leg up also that helps. My doctor and my therapy praises those two excises.
