Pain in the bum

Posted , 6 users are following.

I am 13 days post op trhp and really suffering from constant pain in lower back and buttocks due to sitting and lying constantly.  Is there anything I can do to relieve the pain.  I do get up constantly and walk about, do my excercies.  I sit on a high chair loaned from hospital with a pillow underneath and cushion behind.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Michelle x

    Hi Michelle,

I can only suggest taking your painkillers and not staying in one position for too long. I had a pile of pillows in my bed and was forever shifting them around to relieve pressure on particular parts of my body.  I bought a memory foam mattress topper too which was an absolute godsend.  Sitting, I had a pillow stuffed in the small of my back and kept getting up for little walks, you are already doing that I know.

Hang in there, you're almost through the first two weeks which most people seem to agree are the most difficult time.

    Hi Michelle,

If you're anything like me you could be quite bruised on the buttocks. Mine were finally gone by week 3. I found the best relief was applying ice regularly. It will get easier but I have to admit at 3.5 weeks my incision still bothers me at night. On the bright side I'm walking without a cane and feel very safe driving. It's uphill from here until the other side!

    Take care,

Oh I am so glad you said that about driving.  I know I might not be ready to drive at 3.5 weeks but I have my driving test on July 28th which is 9 weeks after op.  I'm praying I will be able to take it as a lot depends on me driving.  Thanks you both for your advice and will definately try more pillows and ice. xxM

It was 6 weeks before I was allowed to drive and I think that's pretty general in the UK if you have a posterior or lateral approach.  It was one of the restrictions I was given after my operation.

    Hi Michelle

Sorry but can't really add anything more to what the lovely Cels has said - except to say with time all this will go away but you have my sympathy right now - it's so frustrating I know but you'll get through it - although appreciate that is scant comfort right now - hope you have a better night tonight and a better day tomorrow xx

So sorry, hollowlegs! I distinctly remember how impossible it was for me to get comfortable during those first weeks. I was constantly moving. I agree that you should make sure you are getting the full dosage of your pain meds, round the clock - set an alarm if necessary. If you are still having significant pain, then talk to your surgeon's office and have them help you get your pain under control. Are you elevating your leg when sitting, and by that I mean that you shouldn't let your legs hang down when you are sitting. You'll be through these difficult first weeks soon!

    Hi Michelle,

    how are you this morning?

I am not sure what I can tell you in addition to what has been said already -

Is it on the operated side?

Remember that you just had major surgery and your body is now healing - you are moving more, and muscles, that have been severed , are putting to work - there are a lot of muscles around the hip area ( not only there, as you know) and one of the ones that bothered me most is the one on or around the buttocks -

I swear I thought at some point thatt the hip joint had moved or something -

my PT, fed up with me going on and on about it , showed me where the joint is located and that is more to the front - I was given some stretching exercises, for instance the butt clenches , which I found hard to do - and some gentle rotating of pellvis (like belly dancer) or a massage might help also to lengthen the muscles.

make sure that when you sit, you sit full on the cheeks - might be uncomfortable, but then breathe through it - so on full cheeks and straight posture, shoulders down and relaxed - UGH !!!!   so much doing, right ?

    big warm hug

    renee
