Hello! This is Larry in Georgia,i had right hip replacement in November 2016 and in four weeks walking and in no pain. March 2017 had left hip replacement. Has been seven weeks i walk just fine but can't bend down to put my shoe on with out severe pain in my buttocks and have severe cramps. has anyone experience that. Could it be a torn muscle or ligament, kind of feels something like that. My doctor took me off therapy and put me on steroids, took my last two steroids today and feels like it's not helping. Thanks for any advice. Larry

    Hi Larry,

It sounds like muscle spasms, which is very common after a hip replacement.  This happened to me during the second month also.  I was given muscle relaxers for a few days, advised to rest with my leg elevated and alternate between heat and cold compresses.  The spasms went away as quickly as they appeared.  Simple stretches can also help.  Make sure that you keep up with PT.  Once your muscles are working properly again the issue should resolve itself.

Best of luck as you continue to recoversmile

I think Kimberley has a good point.  It does indeed sound like muscle spasms.  Pain in the buttox on the side of the surgery is very very normal for a while.  I remember having that as well, but Kimberley is correct.  PT will help and stretches will help too, but I would talk to your physical therapist before doing anything, they know how to exercise you without any injury to anything.  They can also recommend when to go back and see your Ortho Doc.

    hello larry in Georgia ,

it looks as if you posted this discussion twice ....cheesygrin

Richard has given you great advice and hopefully you got some quinine to help you with the cramps ...

You had 2 major surgeries within 4 months and your body needs time to heal .. You probably had anterior approach because with posterior approach there is no bending or breaking 90 degrees rule for at least 6 weeks, usually longer ..

why did you need steriods?  Are you taking any pain medication?

    please let us know okay?

you are not alone - we are all here to support you ..

    big warm hug

Hi Renee! Yes I did post it twice, lam 70 years old and just learning to use this smarter than I am phone. My doctor said I had inflammation in my hip causing the pain so he put me on steroids, took my last two pills two days ago, still have pain in my hip going all the way to my ankle. I go see my doctor tomorrow. I think he might do a MRI to find out what is causing the pain. Thanks Larry

Sorry you are going through this. You are only 7 weeks out from your THR, so perhaps it will resolve on its own, especially if you rest enough. If, after a reasonable amount of time it has not gotten better, then you need to find a medical professional who can help you, and that may not be your original surgeon.

After a THR, I had torn gluteus medius and minimus tendons. I had pain and severe limping. To get a diagnosis of torn soft tissue, you need a physician who is experienced and knowledgeable. My original orthopedic surgeon didn't have a clue about what was wrong with me. I had to go for a second opinion to a surgeon who knew about gluteal anatomy and physiology, and was able to diagnose, and then do surgical repair to fix me. I was diagnosed with physical exam and MARS MRI, which is Metal Artifact Reduction Sequence, a type of MRI, due to the hip replacement implants in my body. I understand that diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound can also be used for diagnosis of soft tissue issues. X-ray can only really can tell you about the bones and implants.

I hope you can find good professional help to get your specific diagnosis and treatment plan, Larry! Many soft tissue problems don't require surgery, and I hope you don't need it. I am 6 months out from the gluteal repair operation, and am just now beginning to feel normal. But that's good for me, since I have not been able to walk normally for the last 21 months, since my THR.

Larry, I'm Bill, an 81 year old male down here inTexas and had my second hip replacement last Oct.  Things seemed to go fine for the first few months; but the I started experiencing a pretty seveer pain in the butt.  When I first try to put weight on the leg, it nearly gives way.  ---At this point, I've got to stop and tell you that last year, my Orthopedic Spine Surgeon over in Dallas told me "you get that hip replaced and then I'll fix your spine, your got terrible stenois in the L4 area".  Well, I had it replaced and now, I guess I've got to let him work on my spine as I am in constant pain and can hardly walk.  My MRI is schedule for 1 May and surgery is scheduled for 8 May.  ---Will let you know how things turn out.
