Pain in toe from lying on back and solution!

I don't know if any one else has had this problem but with the quilt resting on my big toe it has been a bit sore. It hadn't been too bad - I'd got to 5 weeks -  till a couple of days ago when it really hurt  to walk and the toe nail bed is really sore and painful.

I know you can buy foot cages but thought I could get away without. Then last night I had a brilliant idea which I wish I had thought of sooner as I wouldn't be faced with waiting a long time  for the pain to go and difficulty walking.

I got a large plastic storage box about 25cm tall, 35 long and 28 wide. Put it on its side at an angle at the bottom of the bed with my foot pillow going into it and I can slide my legs along to it and it keeps the quilt off my feet. Plus as it has a back there are no draughts from the bottom of the bed.

I had a much better night last night. I just hope the toe pain goes quickly now as my post op meet is Tuesday.

Thought I'd just post my solution in case anyone else has the big toe problem!

It was just my heels that got sore but you should be able to sleep on your side with a body pillow after your 6 week review....I remember it was bliss!!

I'm certainly hoping he says I can. I had so many pillows under my lower legs - 2 around the knee and one nearer the foot that my heels were ok.

Sleeping on my side and driving are my 2 big wants!

Certainly is but I learnt my lesson just after week three when I tried to put too much weight on the operated leg and it  really hurt. Since then I have been taking it very steadily and the improvements just come gradually.

Hi Anne, I had an ortho wedge between my ankles post-op and replicated with two lage foam rubber dice when I came home ;-) I made them years ago for my daughters B'day party so nothing naughty! Like you, bedclothes on my feet/legs were causing problems, esecipally as they were so swollen. The dice did the trick, goes to show what inventive ideas we can have when needed most.

    Best wishes, Dot.

Certainly does. There are lots of good ideas on this site. It would be great if they could all be put together in one place! It would be a nice project to make a booklet.

Hi Carol, I have just turned 6 weeks today. I was told that if I didn't need the crutches when I went to the post op meet I could hand them in. The info was that between 4 and 6 weeks if able could gradually go from 2 to 1. This is what has happened with me. First 3 weeks terrible with very little change. At week 4 I was walking with 2 crutches and the changed to 1. During week 5 I have been pottering about the house with no crutches for some of the time and I only take 1 on a walk. Sometimes I have just taken a walking stick instead and not  used it much at all. I'm doing only about half to 3/4 mile a day. I still occasionally use a stick in the house and garden but not so often and I still get stiff and hobble a bit till I get going. I have not broken the 90 degree rule though. I can now go upstairs properly sometimes thought a bit jerkily but not downstairs. I can't stand for great lengths of time. After walking and standing my hip aches quite a bit and the muscles are still a bit tender. My scar is still sore and there are still bruises. Part of the scar is numb and a bit below it. My quadriceps are still quite weak and  this is what is stopping me on the stairs. I only take pain killers at night now which is good.

I'm anxious too about what the results will be of the xray but as i am improving daily I hope they will be ok.

It seems that each different hospital have their own ideas. But also each person's hip is different so they may tell people different things because of that.

I have been trying to be sensible and let my body tell me what I can do. Sometimes it surprises you like one night earlier on when I got out of the bed and suddenly realized I'd walked round the bed with no stick!

      Good luck for Wednesday.

I placed one chair at the foot of the bed and another at the side near the end.i draped the duvet over both chairs.  It was better than a bed cradle, because there was nothing in the bed to get tangled up with. It took the pressure off my foot and left it free to move around.
