Pain Management

Hi I wonder if anyone could offer any advice. I was discharged from hospital a week today after ankle surgery with Painkillers. I haven't been taking the full dose but only have 12 codeine Painkillers left. Having fought not to take them I have found that 1 in the morning eases the pain to make it bearable and 2 of these at night help me to have a good night's sleep. I am worried I will run out as these will last me only 4 days. Is it normal not to send you home with pain medicine which will only last 2 weeks. I have a visit from a community nurse in a week to change my dressing. Do I have a word with her about it as I am in between doctors. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. x

Hey Julie, I hope all is well. I don't understand why they didn't give you enough for 30 days is it possible you can call the doctor that prescribed you the medication and asked him could he do a refill and send it to the nearest pharmacy or if that doesn't work maybe the other doctor you are seeing. If that doesn't work then yes, asked the nurse could she help out with that and the last option I would say is wherever that medication was filled at called the pharmacist and asked them could they send a request to the doctor office to do a refill that's what always works for me they will send it the same day and you will get your medication the same day I used Walgreens I hope this will work for you! Be Blessed

I was in a lot of pain the first few weeks after surgery. I needed my pain meds renewed and my doctor did this without hesitation. Fortunately I did not need all the pills. But I was happy to have them if I did. Ask your doctor to renew prescription. Good luck!

Im in Canada.yes was sent home with a limited amt ..they renewed mine..I think its because of the type of med..they have to be careful

    Hi Julie,

I was worried also when I had my surgery. But I was in some serious pain that you know all to well. I was scared to call my doctor thinking he would think I was a big baby! But when I called I only got his nurses and within 15 mins I had a prescription called in for me. When I went back to see him and have things checked out he asked me if I needed more pain meds. And I took them! I was sure I wouldnt need that many but I did. When he offered them I told him how embarressed I was that I was still in pain. He told me that its normal and the ones who can go with out pain meds much earlier were the lucky ones.

Never doubt youself or your pain. Everyone is different in their surgeries. Not one alike, trust me. They may have the same names but everyones experience is different.

    Best of luck to you!

i got discharged with about 3 days supply after an ankle fusion! i think it depends on hospital policy. ring your GP for more supply. also keep yourself pain free rather than just hold it. if you don't want to take more codeine stick to the codeine you are taking and have paracetomol in between.

    Good luck.

    Hi Julie,

I found that setting the alarm on my phone to go off exactly when I was suppose to take meds (including OTC meds) really helped keep me ahead of the pain, that way I always had an even amount through the day. Even if they don't refill your prescription (which they more than likely will) this way you don't have to remember even with the lower strength ones. I even put what med I needed to take in the notes so I didn't have to remember that either. It does interrupt sleep, but better to be awaken to take a pill than by pain. Much easier to go to sleep after a quick swallow of meds. Hoping your pain goes away quickly and your healing goes by fast! Stay safe!

    Hi Julie,

My surgeon did the same for me. I was sent home with nerve blocks though. I would call your doctor. I hope you feel better soon.

Hi Everyone Thank you so much for your advice and kind words they have really helped me so much. I wanted to give an update. I contacted my Dr and was issued with a new prescription for my Painkillers so am more able to keep the discomfort and pain under control now. I have had my dressing changed and have to go back again this week as one of the incision sites hasn't closed up properly yet so they want to keep an eye on it. The nurse said she thinks it will heal but because I had to wait 3 weeks to change the dressing the area wasn't as dry as it should have been. So that's being dealt with now. Just received a letter about physio assessment. My boot may come off in another 3 weeks fingers crossed if all is well then on to the next stage of recovery. I just wish mentally I was in a better place still find myself crying and worrying about the future and feeling hopeless. Guess it will take time. Just have to become more positive and be thankful I didn't suffer any more injuries. Love to everyone who is going through this. I am quite tough or so I thought but this is a struggle. Be strong. ♥️

Hello, I had ankle surgery 4 weeks ago (its painful isnt it) and should have been sent home with 28 days worth of codeine and paracetamol. I think the NHS are running out of painkillers - I was actually sent home with 1 box of codeine and 1 box of paracetamol (28 tablets in both), which was nowhere near enough as I should have been taking them up to 4 times a day! Mine lasted just over 1 week.

If you are having a nurse come in I would certainly ask - it cant do any harm. I am just using paracetamol but to be honest its not touching the constant pain - which feels like my ankle is constantly wrapped in stinging nettles.

Like you due to coronavirus I have had no follow up since my plaster was removed 2 weeks ago. I was given a number to call if I had any concerns and I called them today as the pain is awful and Im supposed to be doing exercises - writing the alphabet with my foot etc but my foot is barely moving. The person I spoke to said it was normal to still get pain and to keep trying to move it - it will all be ok it just takes time! To be honest Im not convinced but will see how I get on. This has been the worse thing ever!

Definitely ask the nurse - hope you manage to get something sorted for the pain.

Hi thank you for your message it was lovely getting your reply. I am 4 weeks since my ankle operation on Saturday. Its still early days I guess for both of us. I haven't been given exercises to do as yet but the physio dept have been in touch so I am sure that will be happening soon. It does scare me how much I will be able to move my ankle though as I have just been moving my toes everyday since it happened. I agree with you on the pain side of things. Never felt pain like it and sometimes not even pain feels like stinging or aching. I feel I have got my pain relief sorted out now 4 weeks down the line with codeine and paracetamol although still don't take the limit each day I am allowed but that's me I was trying to bear the pain at the very beginning not take too many tablets but realised I needed to take them to keep on top of the pain and keep my spirits up. I am the worst patient ever as before this I was active walking everywhere not keeping still. I am not sure about you but I am just taking each day as it comes some days are good feel I can cope and everything will be alright others not so good. My only goal is to get back to normal and walk again honestly. I know that I will never take walking for granted again. The day I can go out with my partner and our dog for walks again and get around unaided by myself is what I am working towards. The simple things really are the most precious. Sending you all the best with your recovery. Julie ♥️
