Pain Management - Pre and Post Op - Cyst & Endometriosis

Posted , 3 users are following.

I'm booked in for an oophorectomy on 28th July.

The op had been booked for a month ago but the surgeon had to cancel and rescheduled me.

I've been experiencing dreadful pain in my ovary area and have even presented at A&E when it was so bad I thought a cyst had ruptured.  I was discharged on the night with 4 x Endone tablets, which worked but are now finished.

I HATE codeine as it makes me really constipated and a bit fluffy headed, and paracetamol doesn't touch the pain. Can't take much buprofen as I'm asthmatic.

I really want to be able to manage my pain before the op so I can function as usual until the day of the op, and to manage the pain post op without getting constipated as it's the last thing I need after abdominal surgery!

Can anyone recommend a STRONG painkiller either over the counter or prescription? My current GP doesn't prescribe opioid type medication, but I have another gp who does, so I'm open to suggestions.

Anything that doesn't constipate me smile

I'm currently in shocking discomfort and pain morning, noon and night

See the GP who does prescribe opiates! Tramadol works for me and it does not cause me constipation as co-codamol did. You need to get something which works before you're admitted as this will probably be given as your pain relief in hospital. I had to take my own meds in with me. I don't think there is a strong pain killer you can buy over the counter apart from codeine but I could be wrong. I had very little pain after the first few days following the same surgery you're having but see the other doctor as soon as poss! rolleyes

Hi Lucy -- first I'm sorry you're suffering from this. It's incredibly painful and some people think "Well, she looks fine!! She can't be too sick"...which is such BS.

I've had several cysts burst inside and I had an oophorectomy, too. I have Endometriosis which just makes my egg holders even more angry...I'm not telling you this because I'm trying to downplay your pain...just wanted you to know that I do understand and have much sympathy for you.

Codeine did nada for my pain...and the other drug you mentioned is sold her in America as Tylenol...Tylenol is excellent for bringing fevers down..but practically useless for pain (Just my experience). Try Hydrocodone if you can get an RX....it's not as strong as oxycodone but it'll help. You'll have to get an RX for it...why is your current Dr. not giving you pain management?? Please be aware that Hyrdo usually has paracetemol with it so don't take any additional Paracetemol with the Hydro (very important!! you can OD on Paracetemol and it can damage your organs if you do..talk with your pharmacist about this if you're concerned).

Hydro may constitpate you...drink a lot of water with it and eat fiber (apples are good for this! And I love a good apple!). Some more tips from the internets about how to get loads of fiber:

Add veggies. You don't have to count grams of fiber to get the amount you need. ...

    Go for grains. ...

    Bulk up on beans. ...

    Add fiber gradually. ...

    Consider a fiber supplement. ...

    Stay hydrated.

Also, try Ibuprofen if you think your body can tolerate it short term. But do ask your Dr. about this before taking it if you are concerned about short term effects. 600 mg Ibuprofen was my best friend when I sufered bouts of Endo...tho, I can't honestly say it did much for my cyst pain. You need something short term to get you to surgery (and afterwards....I hope this Surgeon plans to give you an RX for pain relief after your surgery...).

You're going to feel so much better after surgery (and after you heal...it takes a few weeks to really feel back to somewhat "normal" but you'll get there).

    Good Luck, Lucy..

    Thanks for your replies.

I saw my other gp today. He prescribed me Targin.  No questions asked. He's a complete crackpot but comes in useful when I need the strong stuff.

So Targin is oxycodone with added naloxone which prevents and treats constipation from opioid pain killers. Winning!

I have one months supply so it'll get me to the op and after.

I almost crawled into the docs today in pain and only took half a tablet and felt better.

I just want this over and done with now so I can get back to my physically fit and active self. I miss riding my horse and being active so much.

    😩
