Hi I am in a similar condition to yourself. Have you seen your consultant again? After my operation I was still in agony with similar pains to you. I pushed do a scan and the consultant saw that my body had produced scar tissue that had bound itself to my sciatic nerve and then held it so it was constantly being irritated.

So first off I would suggest seeking medical advice and pushing for a scan.

Then decide what type of pain you are in. It sounds similar to mine which is neropathic pain in which case I have found that gabapentin has been very helpful. Or if it is general pain from the operation site then a more general painkillers might be helpful. I have found morphine and oxycodene have been very helpful to me.

You can ask your GP to refer you to a pain management clinic in your local area and they may try different things, IE acupuncture, facet joint injections of pain relief, TENs machines etc etc.

You may also have no issues at all with the discs that were fused but have a problem with a disc above or below.

Best thing to do is seek medical help.

In this answer I have assumed you are in the UK. I have also told you about treatment and medication that I have recieved. I am NOT a doctor and I am not giving medical advice specific to your conditions. I am just telling you about what I have been through.

Very very sensible reply.  But none last long do they you have to say, is the pain the same, worse or relieved slightly. Tried all those and I haven't had fusion. TENS machines do you go to bed with it because thats when you sometimes need pain relief.  I haven't had fusion but two surgeons wanted to do it, but the third told me it was very dangerous so I am going along with him.  When all the surgeons when on strike in Spain, he stuck it out.

Stuart, I think we all talk about ourselves and what we have tried, there is nothing, zilch, nada that will solve the pain 24/7

I slipped on the stairs when I was in my middle 30s on leather bottomed slippers brought from Benidorm (they still sell them) Had lots of orsteopothy too and it was he would said he couldn't do anything else and to go for X Rays etc. I have spent many thousands of £s and €s trying to get answers and there isn't anything permanent - yet...

Just come from the hospital now where they have got appointments mixed up (just like last time) so i will see what the 1pm appointment does.  All I wanted was was a cortisone injection in my thigh because I know it has done more for me than anything else and I didn't just have drs do my injection I had surgeons.

Flipping heck, what a mess we are in arn't we hospitals in the UK and Spain.  it seems so easy to me but I am no professional.

Hi Enna1, I have to say my pain has increased but my spine is now stable. I am unsure why my pain has increased because the surgeon said my sciatic nerve is clear. I can only think it is due to scar tissue.

Im sorry you havent found any answers yet, I hope some good comes to you soon.

Maybe its just operation pain.  It has taken me several years to get over mine. my friend is a physio oh my God does she hurt and she didn't solve my pain anyway.  Mind I am 73 coming up so you have to have something at that age don't you!!!

I do agree with Stu though that you must seek professional help - drs know what they are doing and what they can give you to help you.

Get well soon both of you, love to hear how you get on.

Often called mulitmodal pain relief, this involves receiving a combo of opioid and one or more other drugs, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, celebrex or neurontin.  All these medications share the ability to relieve pain, and each can be given in low enough doses to avoid side effects.

Daniel, I have read your message, doesn't say much for a fusion does it if you are still in pain.  I think now i have decided not to have a fusion, not just your message but others too.  Think you must be in the States because I have not heard of anything like these meds. I take Lyrica but it messes with your memory and would not recommend it.  Thanks for sharing.

I had laminectomy fusion L4/L5 S1 back on 12/22/14 and had good recovery in beginning but after 8 mos pain got worse as I slowed down PT- pain set in so bad when I walked doctor did X-rays said I wasn't quite fused gave me tramadol and a bone stimulator - wore for 4 mos 3-4 hours a day...went to dr a month ago recheck as nerve pain burning down buttocks to legs into shin. Hurt so bad I cried a lot so he put me on hamate ten only 300 mg a day --- I feel u could benefit with more dosage but it's been 2 weeks and some results as long as I don't do too much. I take tramadol and Tylenol as well each night to sleep- I am having a MRI in June to see if I need more surgery - hope you feel better and get pain relief! Pam
