Pain on the bottom of my toes/foot

Quick recovery question: I'm 16 days post op and pain around incision and bone is sporadic and bearable, the first 48hrs were awful. What is not bearable without painkillers is a pulling like pain on the underside of my big toe, and second toe which runs down to pad of my foot. It is only when i walk (in surgical shoe) and my toes inadvertently flex or lift. Not sure if this is from the pins/screws. Has anyone else experienced this?

My surgeon told me at 2 weeks post op to start manually flexing the toe to break up scar tissue. The first day I did that the pain was enormous for about 12 hours. Then back to a 1-2 level. That was yesterday. Going to try it again today only gentler. I got a prescription without acetaminophen because the toxicity levels if you need a lot of pain meds is a real issue with things like Vicodin.

Thanks for your response. Did you feel the pain mostly on the pad of your foot below your big & second toe? I've been really trying to just stay off of my foot, that way there is no need for the meds. I was given Percocet.  It started on day 11 and it's still present. I saw my surgeon yesterday, he took more xrays and said other than the soft tissue swelling everything looks good. I guess it must have something to do with the pins or tendons around there.

My pain was focused around the incision and the site of the pin, but it was a burning, throbbing and jabbing set of pains. An ER doc said it might simply be nerve pain as connections that were severed try to sort out the signals.

    Hi

I had my op on the 9th July on both my feet i also had what they call a release which is where they stretch your tendons. My psyio told me that sometimes if you have a bunion op and they dont do the tendon release it can cause problems. That the only thing I can think why you suffering

Hi mcoops I am also day 16 post bilateral akin scarf bunion surgery.  I too have a strange feeling- I feel like I have about a quarter of an inch of cardboard inside the inner side of the base of my second toe.  Every time I move my foot it feels like the carboard is rubbing up and down.  I have no bandages on (although this feels also a bit like a separating bandage between big toe and second toe).  Very yukky feeling.  I always assumed it was the separating surgical bandage but it has now been 8 days since I have had no bandages so not sure what it is.  I did have some surgery on the second toe as well so perhaps this is some sort of pulling going on.  I have tried icing it and also massaging it but there has been no let up in the feeling - almost worried something has been left inside like a piece of guauze.  Know this is a ridiculous thought but would like to see just a little bit of change so as to be assured this is just soft tissue stuff.

Re your pain on the underside, I had a bit of this earlier on and got relief by massaging the wound area.  I guess when it is stitched and then healing there is a lot of pulling from various directions.

That's an odd feeling. Did your Dr. take an xray?  Must still be very inflammed.  My big toe is still very swollen and bruised.  I still have the toe spacer between my big and second toe for at least 4 more weeks. From what I have read, the underside pain is caused by a traumatic fracture of the metatarsali. Hopefully it'll go away once the bone is fully healed. I'm back to icing it.

Yes I had an xray on day 8 when stiches and bandages came off.  I didn't mention the feeling at that appointment because I thought it was the bandages but will ask at my next appointment.  I have done nothing to injure the foot so can only assume it is some inflamation.  So for me too it is back to icing.

The whole recovery process seems to be a bit rocky with good stretches, then more pain as tendons are stretched in unfamiliar ways and pressure is placed on parts of the foot that are unaccustomed. I'm good with all that as long as I have some kind of pain relief to fall back on when the pain flares but I clearly have to be more insistent with my podiatrist.
