I just wondered how long the pain stays after (hopefully) a non-complication ceramic hip replacement op

Hi Annee, have you had your op yet?

I had ceramic on ceramic last July, and I was lucky, didn't have much pain at all. First few days were hard, but I took all my prescribed meds for the first fortnight. The days were fine, but I hated the nights, very uncomfortable!

Everyone is different though. I was very lucky, my surgeon was excellent, very experienced, and the care in the hospital was great. Also apart from my hip, I was healthy and reasonably fit. I think a lot would depend on your general health and fitness.

    Good luck.

      Thanks Judith

It was just s kind of ballpark figure. Was healthy before. They told me my haemoglobin was low b4 the op, obv much lower post so having never been anaemic b4, I imagine the iron tabs will make a difference soon too to how I feel.

I think my surgeon was good, care was good.

Now on day 8 so hopefully will get somewhere soon.

      Thanks for your words.

Dear Annee, I was the same, first ciuple of weeks were tough. However, I havent taken any pain relief since 3 weeks post op.  I am now at 6 months!  Its more muscle ache and tightness I suffer with.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

From reading of the different experiences of others here it can be almost anything I know that does not really help you but there are so many factors involved but a positive attitude has got to be a big one in any recovery.

    All the best

      Thanks Richard

I will feel better and more lively when my hb goes up a bit.

I remain positive, life was impossible before with needed bilateral ops. Happy tho only one at a time as per Cons. He declined my request for both together. Thank goodness!!

      Thanks for your words

Hi annee, I have had both replaced within nine months of each other. The second one is seven months old now. They were both ceramic, anterior procedures.

The first hip recovery time was a bit longer (about 3 weeks) than the second because I was having to rely a lot on the second leg which was extremely painful. After the second hip was replaced I was like a brand new woman and got rid of my crutches after a week. So it all depends on your fitness and muscle strength. Also I walk a lot and use an exercise bike when the weather is bad.

      Hi Gwen

That sounds like me. I have been going crazy with frustration not being able to walk distances. All you say is so reassuring to hear. I did ask the Cons if he would do both together and he said no, I am thankful for that ATM but it's so good to hear of your similar story. I have a x-trainer I will use as soon as possible and am back to imagining long walks once I am over this first op.

I have not had crutches, only sticks after the Zimmer in hospital.

Thank you for the words having had both done yourself really helps too.

Don't forget to wait the six weeks after surgery for clearance from your surgeon.

Hi Gwen. I am 5 weeks post op TLHR anterior. Still have restless feeling and pain in operated leg but would be doing much better if I had a good right hip. On the list for that one nx Feb unless someone cancels. Hope I can make it that long !!! Glad your bionic parts are on good working order ??😊👍

Hi Aneee - I am afraid whatever answer you'll get may not be suitable for you.

Personally, though I had the op because of breaking my femur head, had severe pain for the first week but paracetamol was enough to soothe it. After the first week, pain only came in the evening and it was not unbearable. All pain stopped after four weeks.

Yet, the response to pain and the op is personal...

    Good luck

Hi It can take months for things to settle down.Remember you've had a major operation. So take a day at a time.regards Amanda h

    Hi Anneee,

After the surgery you will be made comfortable with prescription pain meds.  Once they have that under control, you should only be uncomfortable at times... not in pain like you where prior to the surgery.

    Best of luck!
