Pain & swelling 7 days post op

Posted , 15 users are following.

i am in agony following my anterior approach THR on 12 th may. My knee & upper leg is really swollen and it's painful to even lift it up to walk. Putting weight on it hurts like hell. Am taking tramadol x2 and paracetamol X 2  four times a day , with oxycodone 5mg when pain is really bad. Applying ice packs helps a bit. Only position I can get relief in is by lying absolutely flat on bed, but know I can't spend all day in bed- I must Excercise.. Also when I sit it feels like I am sitting on something under the hip - like a ball or something. Does any of this sound familiar to other people ? Am starting to wonder whether having this done was the right decision after all!

    Hi Chris,

Thats me now 14 days post op.  i had horrendous swelling to the point it felt like my leg was about to pop.  Just in the last few days it has almost gone back to normal. What really helped was keeping it elevated at night and making sure I didnt sit still too long in the day.  I also had the golf ball feeling, however I think it is just swelling around the joint site.  It has also started to go away as the swelling has dropped.

Hang in there, you wont believe what another 7 days can do in terms of recovery.

    David.

Hope everything is ok, don't push yourself too much, rest when needed. As for the healing process, how long is a piece of string? could be any length, the same as our recoveries, take care.

    Hi Chris

just seen your post - was going to say the same as others - that most of what you are feeling is normal pist op in the early days , and that although it doesnt feel like it, things will settle in time . I understand you had a fall and are seeing the doctor today which is wise after a tumble - i do hope everything is OK. I had a fall ( did the splits on a wet bathroom floor after teenager left it in that state) at 5 weeks - went to A and E and was xrayed - all was ok although very painful for a good few days .  Let us know what they say when you see them today - thinking of you xxxx

Chris, I've only just now got myself down to one 5 mg Oxy after almost three weeks. Surely you can take more than that for your level of pain? Again, check with the doctor. Being pain-free is a huge component of the healing process. It helps us rest and exercise, both of which are very important to recovery. Please let us know what your doctor says. Hang in there! xo

Hi Linda and all others who have replied to me . Saw GP Friday and she thinks no damage done and she gave me  some more  pain killers and told me not to be frightened to take them ( which I was)! As the weekend went on, pain has got bit better. Thanks so much for all your support

Very glad there was no extra damage.

It is hard knowing the right balance re meds, but they are important to keep the pain in check. Just stay within the max doses and every once in a while try to cut it down (I found I could go longer during the day without, but needed full allotment at night until ~ 4 weeks slowly coming off them at ~ 7 weeks unless I was having a particularly hard day or night.

Sleep remained an issue for a while after but then I asked my physician about using melatonin (I used it to regularize my sleep when traveling long distances regularly in my job). I took it for a week (1 tablet under the tongue, 30 min before bed) and that did the trick for me .... I still wake a few times a night but get back to sleep fairly easily.

I hope your recovery goes smoothly and more rapidly from here on in.

    Hugs,

    L

Hi, rest assured, what you have described is completely normal.

I had my first THR at 20 years old and my most recent 3 years ago. Everything feels `not right' for a while but it will settle down in time.

Listen to your body, it will be the best guage of what you should/can do during your recovery. But remember, positive, forward thinking will make all the difference.

    Best of luck : )
